Bergen op Zoom to Ossendrecht via Markiezaatsmeer

Plan on a long, flat, waterside walk of about 26 km / 16.2 mi with essentially 0 m / 0 ft of climbing—more “big-sky wetlands and dikes” than “hills and viewpoints.” The character is open and breezy for much of the day, with big horizons around the Markiezaatsmeer and long straight sections where steady pacing matters more than fitness.

Start location (nearest known address / landmark): the most practical start point is Bergen op Zoom railway station, Stationsplein 1, 4611 BX Bergen op Zoom (Netherlands). (vertrekinfo.nl)
Finish location (nearest known landmark): Ossendrecht village center, near Sint Gertrudiskerk (St. Gertrudis Church), Ossendrecht (postal code area 4641). (en.wikipedia.org)

Getting to the start (public transport + car)

• By train: Bergen op Zoom station is a regional rail hub on the Roosendaal–Vlissingen line, with frequent intercity services stopping there. (en.wikipedia.org)

• By car: Navigate to Stationsplein 1, 4611 BX Bergen op Zoom; there’s a station forecourt area and nearby paid parking options around the station zone. (vertrekinfo.nl)

Return logistics (important for planning): If you’re not doing a point-to-point with a pickup, you can use regional buses between Ossendrecht and Bergen op Zoom (commonly routed via Ossendrecht’s Eikelhof stop to Bergen op Zoom’s Antwerpsestraat area). Check times close to your date in HiiKER and the local journey planner because frequencies vary by day and season. (rome2rio.com)

What the route feels like underfoot (and how to pace it)

With 26 km / 16.2 mi on flat terrain, most hikers take 5.5–7.5 hours depending on breaks and wind. Underfoot you’ll typically see a mix of: - paved or hard-packed dike-top paths - gravel farm tracks - occasional softer edges near reedbeds (can be muddy after rain)

Because the elevation gain is negligible, the main “difficulty” comes from exposure: wind, sun, and the psychological grind of long straight dike lines. Bring a light wind layer even on mild days.

Markiezaatsmeer: wetlands, birds, and big-water navigation cues

As you swing out toward the Markiezaatsmeer, the landscape opens into a managed wetland system shaped by the Netherlands’ Delta Works-era water engineering. The Markiezaatskade (a compartmentalisation dam) was built in the early 1980s as part of the Delta Works framework and helped create the wetland/lake environment associated with the Markiezaat area. (en.wikipedia.org)

This is prime bird country: reedbeds, marsh, and willow groves support a wide range of species, and the area is recognized for its importance to birds (with large parts protected and not freely accessible). Depending on season and access points along your line, you may spot raptors and wetland birds such as Western marsh harrier, red-crested pochard, water rail, little grebe, common greenshank, and European stonechat. What to look out for here - Wind on the dikes: headwinds can slow you dramatically; budget extra time if the forecast is breezy. - Limited shade: sun exposure is constant—cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen matter. - Access restrictions: much of the reserve is intentionally closed to protect wildlife; stay on signed public paths and use HiiKER to confirm you’re on permitted lines. Bergen op Zoom’s historic edge: fortifications and the “Gevangenpoort”

If you begin near the station and thread toward the older center before turning out to the water landscape, you’re walking out of a town with deep medieval and early-modern defensive history. Bergen op Zoom’s surviving medieval gate, the Lievevrouwepoort (often referred to as the Gevangenpoort), is tied to the city’s 14th-century fortifications and later served as a prison—one of the most tangible
