Loop
“Wander through a living tapestry of wetlands, woodland, and whispering wildlife at the Hagevenpad.”
Starting from the vicinity of the Provincievijver, just outside Neerpelt in the Limburg province of Belgium, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a leisurely day outdoors. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available near the Provincievijver recreational area. For those using public transport, Neerpelt train station is the closest major stop; from there, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the starting point.
Navigating the Route
The Hagevenpad is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER is recommended. The path meanders through the Hageven-De Plateaux nature reserve, a cross-border conservation area straddling Belgium and the Netherlands. Expect a mix of wide, sandy tracks and narrow, grassy paths, all suitable for most fitness levels and accessible year-round.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The Hageven-De Plateaux reserve is renowned for its mosaic of wetlands, heath, and woodland. Early in the hike, you’ll skirt the Provincievijver, a large pond popular with birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for great crested grebes, herons, and, in spring and autumn, migratory waterfowl. Around the 2 km (1.2 mile) mark, the trail enters open heathland dotted with juniper and broom, where you might spot grazing Galloway cattle or Konik horses—introduced to help maintain the landscape.
At roughly 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll cross wooden boardwalks over peat bogs and marshes, a habitat for rare dragonflies and amphibians. The air is often filled with the calls of reed warblers and, if you’re lucky, the elusive bittern. The landscape transitions into mixed woodland, where red squirrels and roe deer are sometimes seen darting between the trees.
Landmarks and Historical Context
Midway through the hike, you’ll pass close to the Dutch border, marked by old boundary stones—a reminder of the region’s shifting frontiers over centuries. The Hageven area itself has a history of peat extraction, which shaped much of the current wetland landscape. Informational panels along the route provide insight into the area’s ecological restoration and its importance as a cross-border nature corridor.
Practical Tips
The entire loop is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it accessible for families and those new to hiking. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. There are benches and picnic spots near the Provincievijver and at intervals along the route, but no refreshment facilities, so bring water and snacks. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash due to grazing livestock and sensitive wildlife habitats.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile signal can be patchy in the more remote sections. The trail is open year-round, but spring and early summer are particularly rewarding for wildflowers and birdlife.
