Loop
“Wander through blooming heath, whispering pines, and sparkling waterways for a serene taste of Veluwe’s charm.”
Starting near the charming village of Loenen in the Veluwe region of the Netherlands, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) circular walk offers a gentle adventure with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located close to the Loenense Waterval, the highest waterfall in the Netherlands, which is a popular local landmark and an excellent spot to begin your journey.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Loenen is accessible via bus from Apeldoorn, which is well-connected by train to major Dutch cities. The nearest bus stop is “Loenen, Waterval,” just a short walk from the trailhead. If driving, parking is available at the Loenense Waterval car park (Beekbergerweg 52, 7371 EV Loenen), which is easy to find and provides direct access to the start of the route.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route follows a mix of well-maintained forest paths and sandy tracks, weaving through the tranquil Veluwe landscape. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and up-to-date trail information, HiiKER is recommended as your primary navigation tool.
Highlights Along the Route
*Vrijenbergerspreng and Waterways* Early in the hike, you’ll encounter the Vrijenbergerspreng, an artificial watercourse dating back to the 19th century. This spreng (spring-fed canal) was engineered to supply water to the Apeldoorn canal system and is a testament to Dutch ingenuity in water management. The clear, flowing water is bordered by lush greenery and provides a habitat for kingfishers, herons, and a variety of amphibians.
*Hoge Berg Weg and Heathlands* As you continue, the trail leads onto the Hoge Berg Weg, a sandy path that traverses open heathland and patches of pine forest. In late summer, the heath erupts in purple blooms, attracting butterflies and bees. Roe deer and wild boar are sometimes spotted in the quieter stretches, especially during early morning or late afternoon.
*Historical Significance* The Veluwe region is steeped in history, with evidence of prehistoric settlements and World War II activity. The area around Loenen is known for its wartime memorials, including the nearby Loenen National War Cemetery, which can be visited with a short detour.
Practical Tips
The route is mostly flat, with an elevation gain of approximately 0 metres (0 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed walk. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. There are benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the watercourses.
Facilities are limited on the trail itself, but Loenen village offers cafés and shops for refreshments before or after your hike. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserves.
This walk is a peaceful exploration of Dutch natural and cultural heritage, ideal for those looking to experience the serene beauty of the Veluwe without strenuous climbs.
