Loop
“Wander through blooming meadows, ancient woodlands, and timeless estates on this peaceful Dutch countryside loop.”
Starting from the tranquil countryside near Bathmen, the Steginks Weg and Landgoed Dorth Route offers a gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Steginksweg and Dortherweg, just south of Bathmen, a small village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. For those arriving by public transport, Bathmen is accessible via bus from Deventer, which is well-connected by train to major Dutch cities. If traveling by car, parking is available near the start point at Landgoed Dorth, a historic estate.
Getting Started: The First Stretch
The route begins by skirting the edges of Bathmen, quickly immersing you in the serene Dutch countryside. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) wind through open farmland, where you’ll pass fields dotted with grazing sheep and traditional farmhouses. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this section ideal for families and those seeking a leisurely pace.
Landgoed Dorth: History and Nature
At around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, the trail enters Landgoed Dorth, a centuries-old estate known for its stately manor house and landscaped parklands. The estate dates back to the 14th century and has a rich history tied to the region’s noble families. The manor itself, though privately owned, can be glimpsed through the trees, and the surrounding grounds are open to walkers. Here, the path meanders beneath ancient oaks and beeches, with spring bringing carpets of wildflowers and autumn offering a spectacular display of color.
Woodlands, Streams, and Wildlife
Continuing through the estate, the next 4 km (2.5 miles) lead you along shaded woodland trails and across small wooden bridges spanning clear, slow-moving streams. This area is a haven for birdlife—look out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead. Roe deer are sometimes spotted at dawn or dusk, and the undergrowth is alive with squirrels and rabbits.
Return to Open Fields
The final stretch of the hike loops back toward Bathmen, passing through more open fields and quiet country lanes. The landscape here is quintessentially Dutch, with wide skies, orderly hedgerows, and distant church spires. The last kilometer (0.6 miles) brings you gently back to your starting point, with benches along the way for a rest or a picnic.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check your progress. The flat terrain means standard walking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is recommended after rain. There are no steep climbs or technical sections, making this an easy walk suitable for all ages.
Facilities and Points of Interest
Public toilets and a small café can be found in Bathmen, just a short walk from the trailhead. The village itself is worth exploring for its historic church and welcoming atmosphere. The route is dog-friendly, though dogs should be kept on a leash within the estate grounds.
This hike offers a peaceful escape into the Dutch countryside, blending natural beauty with a touch of local history, and is easily accessible whether you’re coming by car or public transport.
