Loop
“Wander through blooming heath, ancient woodlands, and castle views on this enchanting Achterhoek countryside loop.”
Starting from the charming village of Barchem in the Dutch province of Gelderland, this 21 km (about 13 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk through the heart of the Achterhoek region, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a leisurely day out. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Lochemseweg and Barchemseweg, just outside the village center, making it easily accessible whether you arrive by car or public transport. Barchem is well-served by local buses from the nearby town of Lochem, which itself is accessible by train from major Dutch cities.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for peace of mind and detailed mapping, HiiKER is the recommended navigation tool. The loop is straightforward, with clear signage at most junctions, but a digital map can help you explore side paths or nearby points of interest.
Castles and Historic Estates
One of the highlights of this loop is its passage by several historic estates and castles, which give the route its name. Early in the walk, you’ll skirt the grounds of Landgoed Ampsen, a centuries-old estate with a stately manor house surrounded by moats and ancient trees. While the manor itself is private, the surrounding woodlands are open to walkers, offering glimpses of the estate’s grandeur through the foliage.
Further along, the route passes near the grounds of Kasteel De Cloese, a striking 19th-century castle set on the banks of the Berkel River. The castle’s neo-Gothic architecture and picturesque setting make it a favorite for photographers. The trail doesn’t enter the castle grounds, but there are several vantage points along the riverbank for a good view.
Woodlands, Heath, and Farmland
The landscape is a patchwork of mixed woodland, open heath, and traditional Dutch farmland. In spring and summer, the heathlands burst into color with wildflowers and heather, attracting butterflies and bees. The forests are home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of birdlife, including woodpeckers and buzzards. Keep an eye out for red squirrels darting among the beech and oak trees.
Cultural and Natural Landmarks
At around the halfway point, the trail passes close to the Lochemse Berg, a low wooded hill that rises gently above the surrounding flatlands. While the elevation is modest, the views from the forested slopes are lovely, especially in autumn when the leaves turn gold and crimson. The area is dotted with ancient burial mounds, silent reminders of the region’s prehistoric past.
The route also crosses several small streams and passes through traditional Achterhoek villages, where you’ll find thatched farmhouses and historic churches. These villages offer opportunities to stop for refreshments at local cafés or bakeries.
Practical Information
The entire loop is on well-maintained paths and quiet country lanes, making it suitable for all fitness levels and for families. There are no significant climbs, and the total elevation gain is negligible—less than 10 meters (about 30 feet) over the entire route. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain, as some woodland sections can be muddy.
Public toilets and water points are available in Barchem and Lochem, but facilities are limited along the route itself, so plan accordingly. The trail is accessible year-round, though spring and autumn are particularly beautiful times to visit.
For those arriving by car, parking is available near the trailhead at Barchem’s village center. If using public transport, take the train to Lochem and transfer to a local bus to Barchem; the bus stop is just a short walk from the start of the loop.
With its blend of history, nature, and rural charm, this loop is a quintessential Dutch countryside experience, ideal for a relaxed day’s hike.
