Loop
“Wander through stately avenues, wildflower woods, and sweeping heath for a vibrant Dutch countryside escape.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Baarn, Netherlands, the Eyckenstein, Bossen and Nonnenland Loop offers a gentle 11 km (about 6.8 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible adventure for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Baarn railway station, which is well-served by trains from Amsterdam and Utrecht, and also accessible by car with parking available near the station or at the entrance to the Eyckenstein estate.
Getting Oriented and Setting Out
The route begins just a short walk from Baarn station, at the entrance to the Eyckenstein estate, a historic manor surrounded by lush woodlands and open fields. The estate itself dates back to the 18th century and is still privately owned, but the surrounding forests and trails are open to the public. The first section of the loop leads you through stately avenues lined with ancient beech and oak trees, remnants of the old estate landscaping.
Woodlands, Heath, and Nonnenland
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail transitions into the Bossen, a patchwork of mixed woodland and open glades. Here, the forest floor is often carpeted with wildflowers in spring, and you may spot roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds. The path is wide and well-marked, with minimal undergrowth, making navigation straightforward. For those who prefer digital navigation, the entire loop is mapped on HiiKER, which is especially useful for tracking your progress and ensuring you stay on course.
At roughly the halfway point, around 5.5 km (3.4 miles), you’ll enter the Nonnenland, a unique area of reclaimed heathland and meadows. This section is notable for its open vistas and the chance to see grazing sheep, which help maintain the heath’s biodiversity. The Nonnenland is also a haven for butterflies and ground-nesting birds, so keep an eye out for skylarks and meadow pipits. The flat terrain and open landscape provide a striking contrast to the denser woodlands earlier in the hike.
Historical and Natural Highlights
The region around Baarn has long been a retreat for Dutch nobility, and you’ll pass several stately homes and old farmsteads along the route. The Eyckenstein estate itself is a highlight, with its neoclassical manor house visible from certain points on the trail. The forests here were once carefully managed for hunting and timber, and you’ll notice the straight, formal lines of old carriageways and drainage ditches.
The loop is almost entirely flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 10 metres (about 30 feet), making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for a relaxed day out. The paths are mostly unpaved but well-maintained, and suitable for walking year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain.
Practical Information
Public transport is the easiest way to reach the trailhead, with regular trains to Baarn from major Dutch cities. From Baarn station, it’s a 10-minute walk to the start of the loop at the Eyckenstein estate entrance on Amsterdamsestraatweg. If arriving by car, parking is available at the estate entrance or in Baarn itself.
There are no facilities directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Baarn offers several cafés and restaurants for refreshments before or after your hike. Dogs are welcome on most sections of the trail but should be kept on a leash, especially in areas with grazing livestock.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into the Dutch countryside, blending history, nature, and easy navigation for a rewarding day outdoors.
