Point-to-Point
“Wander beneath emerald canopies and past purple heather, discovering estates, sandy hills, and woodland wonders.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Baarn, this 16 km (about 10 miles) route to Hilversum Media Park is a gentle, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a relaxed day out in the Dutch countryside. The trailhead is conveniently located near Baarn railway station, making it easily accessible by train from Amsterdam, Utrecht, or Amersfoort. For those arriving by car, parking is available at or near the station.
Through Historic Estates and Forests
The first stretch leads you through the stately avenues and manicured grounds of Kasteel Groeneveld, a grand 18th-century country estate. The castle itself is a highlight, surrounded by landscaped gardens, ponds, and ancient trees. The estate is open to visitors, and the grounds are free to explore, offering a glimpse into the region’s aristocratic past. Keep an eye out for the ornate bridges and sculptures dotted throughout the park.
Leaving Groeneveld, the path meanders into the Baarnse Bos, a tranquil forest known for its straight, tree-lined lanes and abundant birdlife. In spring and summer, the woods are alive with the calls of woodpeckers and songbirds, while deer and foxes are sometimes spotted in the quieter clearings.
Zevenbergjes and Aardjesberg: Natural Highlights
Around the halfway mark, you’ll reach the Zevenbergjes, a series of small, sandy hills formed during the last Ice Age. These low mounds are covered in heath and pine, providing a subtle but distinct change in scenery. The sandy soil supports a unique mix of flora, including wild heather and juniper, and in late summer, the area is awash with purple blooms.
Shortly after, the route passes Aardjesberg, another modest rise in the landscape. While the elevation is minimal, these hills offer a sense of openness and are a favorite spot for local wildlife. Look for buzzards circling overhead and, if you’re lucky, the rare sand lizard basking on a sunny patch.
Approaching Hilversum Media Park
The final section leads you through the Spanderswoud, a mixed woodland with wide, well-maintained paths. This area is popular with local walkers and cyclists, but there’s plenty of space to enjoy the peace and quiet. The forest gradually gives way to the urban edge of Hilversum, and the route finishes at the Media Park, the heart of Dutch broadcasting. The Media Park railway station provides direct train connections back to Amsterdam and other major cities.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. There are several opportunities to stop for refreshments, especially at Kasteel Groeneveld’s café and in the villages along the way. Public toilets are available at the castle and near the Media Park.
This hike is suitable for all fitness levels, with wide, mostly flat paths and no technical sections. Dogs are welcome on most parts of the trail, though some areas may require a leash. The best time to walk is from April to October, when the forests and heathlands are at their most vibrant.
