Point-to-Point
“Drift through quiet borderland lanes where reed-fringed waters and muddy meadows blur Netherlands into Germany.”
This is a lowland borderland walk through the eastern Achterhoek where the Netherlands and Germany meet: quiet farm lanes, river meadows, and the watery mosaic around the Aa-strang and Oude IJssel. At around 16 km / 10 miles with roughly 0 m / 0 ft of climbing, it suits a relaxed pace—though the “easy” feel depends heavily on how wet the riverside paths are.
Likely start area (nearest clear landmark/address): the most practical, well-known jumping-off point for the Engbergen section is the parking area by Restaurant Engbergen, Engbergseweg 6–8, 7083 Voorst (near Gendringen), Netherlands—a common trail access for walks that follow the Aa-strang/Oude IJssel confluence landscape. From there, the route trends east toward the border hamlets around Dwarsefeld and on to Anholt (Germany).
Bring waterproof footwear in wetter months: the riverside and low meadow sections can hold water and turn slick or churned-up.
What to look for - Hedgerows and small woodlots that act as wildlife corridors. - Winter and early spring: saturated verges, standing water in low spots, and muddy tractor ruts.
Underfoot, surfaces often alternate: - firm gravel or compacted paths near access points, - softer earth tracks closer to the water, - occasional narrow, grassy lines along ditches.
Wildlife and nature - Birdlife is the headline: herons, egrets, and a steady mix of songbirds along scrubby edges; in migration periods, more variety over the wet fields. - Deer can appear at dawn/dusk near woodland margins. - Ticks are a real consideration in tall grass and reed edges—especially late spring through autumn. Long socks help; do a full check after the hike.
Navigation note: the Engbergen area has many intersecting tracks (some seasonal). Keep HiiKER handy here so you don’t drift onto a parallel farm track that looks “more obvious” but isn’t on your line.
