Point-to-Point
“Wander from Presikhaaf’s leafy calm through lush parks and historic streets, where Arnhem’s charm unfolds beautifully.”
Starting from the leafy residential area of Presikhaaf in Arnhem, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) route with a gentle elevation gain of around 100 metres (328 feet) offers a relaxed yet engaging walk through some of Arnhem’s most charming green spaces and historic neighborhoods. The trailhead is easily accessible: from Arnhem Centraal Station, take a local bus or train to Presikhaaf Station, or park at the Presikhaaf Shopping Center if arriving by car.
Presikhaaf and Sacre Coeur
The walk begins near the Presikhaaf Shopping Center, a well-known local landmark. The area is known for its post-war urban planning and abundant green spaces. Heading south, you’ll soon pass Sacre Coeur, a striking church with a unique architectural style that stands as a testament to Arnhem’s religious and cultural history. The church’s grounds are peaceful, often dotted with locals enjoying the gardens.
Park Angerenstein: Woodland and Waterways
At around 2.5 km (1.5 miles), you’ll enter Park Angerenstein, a lush city park that was once the estate of a noble family. The park is famous for its stately old trees, meandering streams, and the historic Angerenstein House, which dates back to the 18th century. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, songbirds, and the occasional red squirrel. The park’s gently rolling terrain provides the first hint of elevation, with a few short but manageable inclines.
Grote Vijver and Surroundings
Continuing west, the route leads you to the Grote Vijver (Great Pond), a tranquil body of water surrounded by mature woodland. This area is a haven for waterfowl, including ducks, coots, and herons. Benches along the pond offer a perfect spot for a rest or a picnic. The landscape here is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, when the trees reflect in the water and the air is filled with birdsong.
Urban Greenways and Arnhem’s Historic Core
Leaving the parklands, the trail follows a series of well-maintained urban greenways and quiet residential streets, gradually descending towards Arnhem’s city center. Along the way, you’ll pass several examples of Arnhem’s distinctive 19th and early 20th-century architecture, including ornate villas and stately townhouses. The final stretch brings you through Sonsbeek Park, one of the city’s most beloved green spaces, before arriving at Arnhem Centraal Station.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The route is mostly flat with a few gentle hills, making it suitable for hikers of all abilities. Surfaces are a mix of paved paths, gravel, and woodland trails. Public toilets and cafes can be found at Park Angerenstein and near Sonsbeek Park. For navigation, HiiKER provides a reliable and detailed map of the entire route, ensuring you stay on track and don’t miss any highlights.
Public transport connections are excellent at both ends of the hike, making it easy to plan your journey regardless of where you’re coming from. The trail is enjoyable year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches in the parks.
