Loop
“Wander Arnhem’s lush parks and tranquil ponds, where history, wildlife, and panoramic views enchant in every season.”
Begin your journey near Park Sonsbeek in Arnhem, a city well-connected by public transport. From Arnhem Centraal train station, it’s a short bus ride or a 20-minute walk to the park’s main entrance. If arriving by car, parking is available at the Park Sonsbeek car park on Apeldoornseweg, a convenient starting point for the loop.
Exploring the Waterways and Woodlands
The route, approximately 8 km (5 miles) with a gentle elevation gain of about 100 metres (328 feet), winds through some of Arnhem’s most scenic and historic green spaces. The trail begins by skirting the edge of the Grote Vijver, a large ornamental pond framed by mature trees and lush lawns. Early in the morning, the water often mirrors the sky, and you may spot herons or kingfishers along the banks.
Continue south toward the Spiegelvijver Zuid, a smaller reflective pond surrounded by landscaped gardens. This area is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, when the foliage creates a vibrant backdrop. Benches along the water’s edge offer peaceful spots to pause and enjoy the view.
Zypendaal Estate and Belvedere Tower
The path leads into the Zypendaal estate, a historic parkland featuring the 18th-century Huis Zypendaal. The manor house, set amid rolling lawns and ancient trees, is a highlight for those interested in Dutch history and architecture. The estate’s grounds are home to red squirrels, woodpeckers, and a variety of songbirds. Trails here are well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to navigate the network of paths and avoid missing any points of interest.
As you ascend gently through the woodland, the route approaches the Belvedere, a 19th-century lookout tower perched on one of Arnhem’s highest points. The climb is gradual, and the reward is a panoramic view over the city and the Rhine valley. The tower itself is sometimes open to visitors, offering an even higher vantage point.
Nature, Wildlife, and Seasonal Highlights
Throughout the loop, expect a mix of shaded beech and oak forests, open meadows, and manicured gardens. In summer, wildflowers line the trails, and butterflies are abundant. The area is known for its biodiversity, with roe deer occasionally seen at dawn or dusk. The ponds attract frogs and dragonflies, making this a lively walk for nature enthusiasts.
Practical Information
Paths are mostly gravel or well-maintained dirt, suitable for all fitness levels and accessible year-round. Restrooms and cafés can be found near the park entrances and at Huis Zypendaal. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife.
Public transport users can return to Arnhem Centraal from several nearby bus stops, while drivers will find easy access back to the main roads from the park’s car park. For navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, HiiKER provides detailed maps and route guidance.
