Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, peaceful forests, and echoes of history on this scenic Veluwe loop.”
Starting from the vicinity of Deelen, a small village north of Arnhem in the Netherlands, this loop trail covers approximately 7 km (about 4.3 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available near the Deelen Airbase Museum, a notable landmark in the area. For those using public transport, buses from Arnhem Central Station stop at Deelen, from where it’s a short walk to the starting point.
Navigating the Route
The loop is well-marked and follows a mix of forest paths and open heathland. For precise navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracks, ensuring you stay on course throughout the hike. The terrain is mostly flat, with wide, sandy tracks and occasional stretches of compacted earth, suitable for walking year-round.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The route traverses the Veluwe, one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands, renowned for its diverse landscapes. Early on, you’ll pass through dense pine and oak forests, where red deer, wild boar, and foxes are sometimes spotted, especially during quieter hours. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for buzzards, woodpeckers, and the occasional black woodpecker, a rare but striking resident of these woods.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail opens onto the Bruine Berg, a gently undulating heathland area. In late summer, the heather blooms in vibrant purple, attracting butterflies and bees. The open vistas here offer a stark contrast to the shaded woodland, and on clear days, you can see for several kilometers across the Veluwe.
Historical Significance
This region is steeped in history, most notably due to its proximity to the Deelen Airbase. Built in the 1940s by the German Luftwaffe during World War II, the airbase played a significant role in the occupation and subsequent liberation of the Netherlands. Remnants of wartime bunkers and shelters can still be seen near the trail, and the Deelen Airbase Museum provides deeper insight into the area’s military past.
Points of Interest Along the Way
At roughly the halfway mark, you’ll skirt the edge of the Deelerwoud, a quieter section of forest known for its tranquility and the chance to spot fallow deer. Benches are scattered along the route, offering peaceful spots to rest and take in the scenery. The loop eventually circles back toward Deelen, passing through more mixed woodland and open fields before returning to the starting point.
Preparation and Essentials
Given the flat terrain and well-maintained paths, standard walking shoes are sufficient for this hike. Bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities directly on the trail. Weather can change quickly, so pack a light rain jacket. Mobile reception is generally good, but downloading the route on HiiKER in advance is recommended for offline navigation.
This loop offers a gentle yet immersive experience of the Veluwe’s natural beauty and wartime history, making it an ideal choice for a half-day outing in the Dutch countryside.
