Loop
“Wander through living history and vibrant wilds, where ancient woodlands and timeless trails invite discovery.”
Nestled in the heart of Drenthe, the Boswachterij Anloo, Arboretum and Gagelveen Loop offers a gentle 10 km (6.2 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Anloo, with the closest significant landmark being the centuries-old Magnus Church (Magnuskerk), a recognizable starting point for your adventure.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Assen, the nearest major railway station. From Assen, local buses (such as Qbuzz line 58) run regularly to Anloo, stopping at Anloo, Kerkbrink, just a short walk from the Magnus Church and the trailhead. If driving, set your navigation to Magnuskerk, Kerkbrink 5, 9467 PH Anloo, where limited parking is available in the village center.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop meanders through the Boswachterij Anloo forest, a managed woodland rich in biodiversity. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, use HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. Expect wide, flat paths suitable for families, casual walkers, and those seeking a peaceful day outdoors.
Highlights Along the Route
*Ancient Woodlands and Arboretum* Early in the hike, you’ll pass through the Anloo Arboretum, a living collection of native and exotic trees. Interpretive signs provide insight into the species and their ecological roles. In spring and summer, the area bursts with birdsong and wildflowers, while autumn brings a vibrant display of foliage.
*Gagelveen Nature Reserve* Around the halfway mark (5 km/3.1 miles), the trail skirts the Gagelveen, a protected wetland and heathland area. This section is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts: look for grazing Highland cattle, roe deer, and a variety of birdlife, including woodpeckers and buzzards. Boardwalks and observation points allow for unobtrusive wildlife viewing.
*Historical Significance* The region is steeped in history. The Magnus Church, dating back to the 11th century, is one of the oldest in Drenthe and features medieval frescoes. Scattered throughout the forest are ancient burial mounds (hunebedden), remnants of the Funnelbeaker culture that inhabited the area over 5,000 years ago. Informational panels along the route explain the archaeological significance of these sites.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With a total elevation gain of less than 5 feet (0 meters), the loop is easy underfoot, though sections can become muddy after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially in the wetter Gagelveen area. There are no major road crossings, but keep an eye out for cyclists on shared paths. Benches and picnic spots are dotted along the route, particularly near the arboretum and wetland viewpoints.
Facilities and Safety
Public toilets and a small café can be found in Anloo village near the start and end of the hike. The area is well-maintained and safe, but mobile coverage can be patchy in the deeper forest sections—download your HiiKER map for offline use. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in nature reserve areas to protect wildlife.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a tranquil walk through Drenthe’s natural and cultural heritage, with easy logistics and plenty to discover along the way.
