Loop
“Meander through shimmering lakes, wildflower meadows, and timeless dikes on this tranquil Dutch countryside loop.”
Starting from the edge of Ankeveen, a charming village in North Holland, the Ankeveense Plassen Loop via Dammerkade offers a tranquil 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Dammerkade and Bergseweg, just a short walk from the village center.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Hilversum or Weesp, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 106 or 120) that stops in Ankeveen. From the bus stop at the village center, it’s a brief stroll to the start of the loop. Drivers can park near the Dammerkade, where limited roadside parking is available.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route follows a scenic path along the Dammerkade, a historic dike that once protected the low-lying peatlands from flooding. The trail is flat and well-marked, with wide grassy verges and occasional gravel sections. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints to ensure you stay on track, especially where the trail weaves between waterways and meadows.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Ankeveense Plassen Nature Reserve: Early in the loop, you’ll skirt the edge of the Ankeveense Plassen, a mosaic of lakes and reed beds formed by centuries of peat extraction. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for great crested grebes, herons, and, in spring, nesting terns. - Historic Dammerkade: The Dammerkade itself is a centuries-old dike, lined with traditional Dutch farmhouses and pollarded willows. At about 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass a small wooden bridge offering panoramic views across the water. - Peatland Canals and Reed Beds: Around the halfway mark, the trail crosses a network of narrow canals, remnants of the region’s peat-cutting history. These waterways are often dotted with water lilies and frequented by kingfishers and dragonflies in summer. - Village of Ankeveen: As you complete the loop, the path returns through the outskirts of Ankeveen, where you can spot the village church spire and perhaps stop at a local café for refreshments.
Nature and Wildlife
The Ankeveense Plassen is part of the Vechtplassen, a protected wetland area. The landscape is dominated by open water, reed beds, and wet meadows, supporting a rich diversity of flora and fauna. In addition to birds, you may encounter grazing cattle or sheep, and in late spring, the meadows are carpeted with wildflowers.
Practical Tips
The trail is exposed in places, so bring sun protection and water, especially on warm days. Waterproof footwear is recommended after rain, as some sections can be muddy. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. There are no facilities directly on the trail, but amenities are available in Ankeveen village.
For a peaceful, easy walk through classic Dutch wetland scenery, this loop is ideal, offering a blend of natural beauty, local history, and abundant wildlife.
