Loop
“Circle shimmering waters and vibrant parkland on this welcoming lakeside loop, where city life meets nature.”
Starting at the eastern edge of Sloterplas, near the well-known Sloterparkbad swimming complex in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, this loop trail offers a flat, accessible 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a leisurely outdoor experience. The area is easily reached by public transport: take tram line 7 or 13 to the Sloterpark stop, or arrive by car and park at the Sloterparkbad parking lot.
Navigating the Route
The loop follows the perimeter of Sloterplas, a large urban lake created in the mid-20th century as part of Amsterdam’s post-war expansion. The path is well-marked and paved, suitable for both walkers and cyclists. For precise navigation and to track your progress, use HiiKER, which provides up-to-date maps and trail information.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
As you set off clockwise from Sloterparkbad, the first stretch hugs the lakeshore, offering panoramic views across the water. Early on, you’ll pass the Sloterpark, a sprawling green space with playgrounds, picnic areas, and open lawns. At around 1.5 km (0.9 miles), look for the floating island art installation, a unique feature that highlights the city’s innovative approach to urban nature.
Continuing west, the trail skirts the edge of the Sloterplas marina, where you’ll see moored boats and, in summer, local sailing activity. At the halfway mark, near the western shore, the route passes the Hotel Buiten, a popular lakeside café with a terrace—an excellent spot for a break.
Nature and Wildlife
Sloterplas and its surrounding parklands are a haven for birdlife. Watch for herons, coots, and grebes along the water’s edge, especially in the quieter northern section. The park’s mature trees and wildflower meadows attract butterflies and songbirds, while the reed beds provide habitat for waterfowl.
Historical Context
The Sloterplas area was once low-lying farmland, transformed in the 1950s as part of Amsterdam’s urban planning vision. The lake itself was excavated for sand to build the surrounding neighborhoods, and today it stands as a testament to the city’s ongoing relationship with water management and green space development.
Facilities and Accessibility
Public toilets are available at Sloterparkbad and Hotel Buiten. The entire loop is wheelchair- and stroller-friendly, with wide, smooth paths and frequent benches. Drinking water fountains and several small kiosks can be found along the route.
Getting There
From Amsterdam Centraal, take metro line 50 or 51 to Lelylaan, then transfer to tram 17 or 1 to Sloterparkbad. By car, use the address President Allendelaan 3, 1064 GW Amsterdam for GPS navigation to the main parking area.
With its blend of urban scenery, lakeside tranquility, and easy access, this loop is a favorite for locals and visitors alike.
