Loop
“Wander through Amsterdamse Bos—a lush, living tapestry of woodland, wildlife, and captivating history.”
Begin your adventure at the main entrance of Amsterdamse Bos, close to the Bosbaan rowing lake, easily accessible by public transport from Amsterdam Zuid station via bus 170 or 172, or by car with ample parking available at the Bosbaan car park. The loop covers approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for all fitness levels and families.
Navigating the Route
The trail is well-marked and follows a gentle circuit through the heart of Amsterdamse Bos, a sprawling man-made forest created in the 1930s as a public works project during the Great Depression. For precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and waypoints.
Highlights and Landmarks
Shortly after setting out, you’ll skirt the edge of the Bosbaan, the oldest artificial rowing course in the world, often bustling with rowers and local wildlife. At about 2 km (1.2 miles), the path leads you toward the serene waters of the Grote Vijver, a large pond surrounded by lush greenery and home to a variety of waterfowl, including herons, swans, and coots. Benches along the shore offer perfect spots for a rest or a picnic.
Continuing west, the trail meanders through dense woodland and open meadows, where you may spot Scottish Highland cattle grazing—part of the park’s ecological management. At roughly 4.5 km (2.8 miles), you’ll reach De Grote Poel, a tranquil lake bordered by reeds and marshland, attracting birdwatchers hoping to glimpse rare species like the kingfisher or bittern.
Nature and Wildlife
Amsterdamse Bos is a haven for biodiversity. The forest is home to over 150 species of birds, foxes, rabbits, and even bats at dusk. In spring and summer, wildflowers carpet the meadows, while autumn brings a spectacular display of changing leaves.
Facilities and Accessibility
Restrooms, cafés, and picnic areas are scattered throughout the park, with the Boerderij Meerzicht pancake house near the 6 km (3.7 miles) mark being a popular stop for refreshments. The wide, flat paths are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, and cyclists share some sections, so stay alert.
Historical Significance
The Amsterdamse Bos was constructed largely by hand during the 1930s as a means to provide employment and green space for the city’s residents. Its design reflects both Dutch landscape traditions and the social ideals of the era, blending recreation, conservation, and community.
Planning Tips
Weather in the region can be changeable, so pack a rain jacket and check HiiKER for trail updates before setting out. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in most areas. The park is open year-round, with each season offering a unique perspective on the landscape.
