Loop
“Winding through tranquil woods and lively lakeside, this loop weaves Amsterdam’s history and nature into one vibrant stroll.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Amsterdam, the Bosbaan and Openluchttheater Loop begins near the entrance to the Amsterdamse Bos, close to the Bosbaan rowing lake. This area is easily accessible by public transport—take tram 5 or metro 51 to Amstelveenseweg station, then walk or cycle about 1.5 km (1 mile) southwest to the Bosbaan entrance. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Bosbaan car park, just off Bosbaanweg.
Trail Overview and Navigation
Covering approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, this loop is ideal for beginners or anyone seeking a relaxed walk. The path is mostly flat, well-maintained, and suitable for families, runners, and cyclists. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints to keep you on track throughout the loop.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
The route starts alongside the Bosbaan, a historic rowing lake constructed in the 1930s as one of the world’s oldest artificial rowing courses. The lake is still used for international regattas, and you’ll often spot rowers gliding across the water. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail veers into the heart of the Amsterdamse Bos, a sprawling man-made forest three times the size of Central Park.
At roughly the halfway point, you’ll reach the Openluchttheater, an open-air theater nestled among the trees. This venue hosts performances and cultural events during the warmer months, and even when empty, its amphitheater-like setting is a unique spot to pause and enjoy the surroundings.
Nature and Wildlife
The Amsterdamse Bos is a haven for wildlife. Expect to see herons, cormorants, and various waterfowl along the lakeshore. The forested sections are home to rabbits, foxes, and—if you’re lucky—deer. In spring and summer, wildflowers and lush greenery line the paths, while autumn brings a vibrant display of changing leaves.
Historical Significance
The Amsterdamse Bos was created during the 1930s as a public works project, providing employment during the Great Depression. The Bosbaan itself is a testament to the city’s sporting history, having hosted numerous international rowing championships. The Openluchttheater, built in the post-war years, reflects the city’s commitment to accessible culture and recreation.
Facilities and Preparation
Restrooms and cafés are available near the Bosbaan and at several points within the forest. The trail is mostly shaded, but bring water and sun protection, especially in summer. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in most areas. The loop is accessible year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain due to occasional muddy patches.
With its blend of natural beauty, cultural landmarks, and easy access, this loop offers a quintessential Amsterdam outdoor experience suitable for all ages and abilities.
