Loop
“Wander through peaceful woodlands, blooming heath, and echoes of history in Utrecht's enchanting heart.”
Nestled in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop offers a gentle walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the parking area at Bergweg, Amerongen, just a short walk from the well-known Amerongse Berg, the highest point in the province of Utrecht. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Veenendaal or Rhenen stop at Amerongen, from where it’s a pleasant stroll to the trailhead.
Getting Started and Navigation
The route begins at the edge of Amerongen village, close to the historic Amerongen Castle, a 17th-century estate with beautifully landscaped gardens. From here, the path quickly leads into the serene woodlands of the Heuvelrug, a region shaped by glacial activity during the last Ice Age. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and clear signage throughout the loop. For precise route guidance and real-time updates, HiiKER is the recommended navigation tool.
Woodlands, Heath, and Wildlife
The first section of the loop meanders through dense beech and oak forests, where the filtered sunlight creates a tranquil atmosphere. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. In spring and early summer, the forest floor is often carpeted with wildflowers and ferns.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail opens up to heathland and sandy clearings, a habitat favored by butterflies and lizards. This area, known as De Blauwe Schuur, is named after a distinctive blue-painted barn that once served as a landmark for shepherds and travelers. The open landscape provides sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and is a great spot for a rest or picnic.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
The region is steeped in history, with Amerongen Castle playing a significant role during World War I as the residence of the exiled German Kaiser Wilhelm II. The surrounding forests were once royal hunting grounds, and remnants of old boundary stones and carriageways can still be found along the route.
Practical Tips
The entire loop is on well-maintained, mostly flat paths, suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed walk. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife. The trail can be enjoyed year-round, though sturdy footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches.
Parking is available at Bergweg, and the nearest address for navigation is Bergweg 10, 3958 Amerongen. For those using public transport, the Amerongen, Tabaksweg bus stop is the closest, about a 10-minute walk from the trailhead. Refreshments and restrooms can be found in Amerongen village before or after your hike.
