Point-to-Point
“From castle gardens to blooming heath, this scenic route weaves history and nature through woodland vistas.”
Starting near the charming village of Amerongen, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) route with a gentle elevation gain of approximately 200 metres (656 feet) offers a scenic journey through the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug region. The trailhead is easily accessible by public transport, with regular buses from Veenendaal or Utrecht stopping at Amerongen, and parking available in the village for those arriving by car.
Through Amerongen and the Stadsbossen Rhenen
The hike begins close to the historic Amerongen Castle, a 17th-century estate surrounded by formal gardens and ancient woodlands. As you leave the village, the path leads into the Stadsbossen Rhenen, a vast forested area known for its mixed woodlands, heather fields, and tranquil ponds. The first 5 km (3.1 miles) are mostly flat, winding through beech and oak forests where you might spot roe deer, woodpeckers, and, in spring, carpets of wildflowers.
Grebbeberg and Historical Significance
Approaching the 8 km (5 mile) mark, the trail ascends gently towards Grebbeberg, a ridge with panoramic views over the Rhine valley. This area is steeped in history; Grebbeberg was the site of fierce fighting during World War II, and a military cemetery here commemorates Dutch soldiers who fell in the Battle of the Grebbeberg in May 1940. Interpretive signs along the route provide context about the battle and the region’s strategic importance. The climb here is the most significant on the route, with a steady but manageable ascent of about 50 metres (164 feet).
Nature and Wildlife
Beyond Grebbeberg, the trail meanders through open heathland and mixed forests, with occasional glimpses of the river below. The area is a haven for birdlife, including buzzards, nuthatches, and sometimes even the rare black woodpecker. In late summer, the heath blooms in purple, attracting butterflies and bees. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, hikers can use HiiKER for navigation and real-time trail updates.
Final Stretch to Laareind
The last 6 km (3.7 miles) descend gently towards Laareind, passing through quiet farmland and small patches of woodland. The landscape opens up, offering views of the surrounding countryside and the distant outlines of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug hills. The trail ends near Laareind, where local buses connect to Rhenen and Veenendaal for onward travel.
This hike is suitable for all levels, with well-maintained paths and only moderate elevation changes. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some forest sections can be muddy. There are several picnic spots along the way, and Amerongen and Rhenen both offer cafés and shops for refreshments before or after your walk.
