Point-to-Point
“Meandering beside the Lek’s shimmering waters, this route weaves together Dutch heritage, wildlife, and peaceful countryside charm.”
Starting from the charming riverside town of Ameide, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) route follows the gentle curves of the Lek River, offering a flat and accessible walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy, scenic day out. The trailhead is conveniently located near the historic center of Ameide, close to the Lekdijk, which is easily reached by local bus from Utrecht or Gorinchem, or by car with parking available near the town square.
Riverside Scenery and Historic Villages
The first stretch leads you along the Lekdijk, a classic Dutch dike road, with expansive views over the river and lush green meadows dotted with grazing cattle and sheep. Early on, you’ll pass the picturesque windmill of Ameide, a reminder of the region’s centuries-old battle with water. The dike itself is a testament to Dutch engineering, protecting the low-lying land from flooding for generations.
After about 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll reach the village of Tienhoven aan de Lek, where the historic church and traditional farmhouses provide a glimpse into rural Dutch life. The route continues along the river, with opportunities to spot waterfowl such as herons, swans, and grebes, especially in the spring and autumn migration seasons.
Crossing the Lek and Exploring Everstein
At approximately 10 km (6.2 miles), you’ll approach the ferry crossing at Schoonhoven, a silver town known for its silversmiths and charming old town. While the hike doesn’t require crossing the river, the ferry is a notable landmark and a good spot for a rest or snack at one of the riverside cafés.
Continuing along the southern bank, the trail skirts the edge of the Everstein estate, once the site of a medieval castle. While little remains of the original structure, the area is rich in history, with interpretive signs detailing the castle’s role in regional conflicts during the Middle Ages. The surrounding woodlands and wetlands are home to deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds.
Final Stretch to Hoef en Haag
The last section leads you through the newly developed village of Hoef en Haag, a modern community designed with sustainability in mind. The route ends near the village center, where you’ll find public transport connections back to Utrecht or Culemborg, as well as parking for those who arrived by car.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. The flat terrain and paved dike paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, though sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited between villages, and be prepared for open, windswept stretches along the river.
This hike offers a blend of Dutch river landscapes, historical sites, and tranquil countryside, making it an ideal choice for a relaxed day outdoors.
