Point-to-Point
“Meandering past dikes, wildflowers, and star-shaped forts, this gentle route weaves Dutch history and nature together.”
Starting from the charming riverside town of Ameide, this 22 km (about 13.7 miles) route offers a flat, leisurely walk through the heart of the Dutch polder landscape, with virtually no elevation gain. The trail is ideal for those seeking an easy day hike, with well-maintained paths and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the serene countryside of South Holland.
Getting There
Ameide is accessible by public transport from major cities like Utrecht and Rotterdam. Take a train to either Utrecht Centraal or Rotterdam Centraal, then transfer to a regional bus (such as Qbuzz line 90) that stops at Ameide, Dorp. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the town center, close to the Lek River embankment.
Rivers, Dikes, and Dutch Heritage
Leaving Ameide, the route follows the Lek River, with expansive views across the water and lush green meadows. The first few kilometers are characterized by classic Dutch dikes, grazing sheep, and the occasional windmill. The landscape is shaped by centuries of water management, and you’ll notice the intricate network of canals and sluices that keep the land dry.
Vesting Nieuwpoort: A Star-Shaped Fortress
At approximately 7 km (4.3 miles), you’ll reach Vesting Nieuwpoort, a beautifully preserved star-shaped fortress town. Nieuwpoort is one of the smallest fortified towns in the Netherlands, dating back to the 17th century. The ramparts, moats, and historic gates are still visible, and the town’s cobbled streets and old houses offer a glimpse into the past. Take time to explore the fortifications and perhaps stop at a local café for refreshments.
Noordelose Kade and the Polder Landscape
Continuing from Nieuwpoort, the trail heads north along the Noordelose Kade, a raised path that cuts through the heart of the polder. This section, stretching for about 8 km (5 miles), is a highlight for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The wetlands and open fields attract a variety of waterfowl, including herons, storks, and geese. In spring and early summer, wildflowers line the ditches, and the air is filled with birdsong.
Approaching Bergambacht
The final stretch leads you toward Bergambacht, a lively village known for its traditional Dutch architecture and welcoming atmosphere. The route passes through more farmland and small hamlets, with occasional views of church spires and farmhouses. Bergambacht offers several options for food and drink, and public transport connections are available for your return journey.
Navigation and Safety
The entire route is well-marked, but it’s recommended to use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. The terrain is mostly paved or gravel, suitable for all fitness levels, and there are no significant elevation changes. Be prepared for exposed sections—bring sun protection and water, especially in summer. The area is generally safe, but keep an eye out for cyclists on shared paths and respect local wildlife.
Historical and Natural Highlights
This hike traverses a region steeped in Dutch history, from medieval river towns to 17th-century fortifications. The polder landscape is a testament to centuries of engineering, and the abundance of birdlife and wildflowers makes it a rewarding walk for nature enthusiasts. The combination of cultural heritage and natural beauty ensures a memorable experience for hikers of all backgrounds.
