Loop
“Wander through peaceful woodlands, blooming heaths, and timeless villages on this gentle, history-rich circuit.”
Starting from the outskirts of Alphen, a small village in the Dutch province of Gelderland, the Fluitberg and Alphensche Bergen Loop offers a gentle 17 km (about 10.5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of N784 and Dorpsstraat, just a short walk from the village center. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Nijmegen and Arnhem stop at Alphen’s central bus stop, which is less than 500 meters from the start. If driving, parking is available near the village church, Sint Willibrorduskerk, a recognizable landmark.
Woodlands and Heaths of the Alphensche Bergen
The route quickly leads into the Alphensche Bergen, a gently undulating landscape of mixed woodland and open heath. The sandy soils here support stands of Scots pine, oak, and birch, interspersed with patches of heather that bloom purple in late summer. The area is known for its tranquility, with wide, soft forest paths and occasional sandy tracks. Birdlife is abundant—look for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive nightjar at dusk. Roe deer are sometimes spotted in the early morning or late afternoon.
Fluitberg: A Subtle Rise in the Landscape
At roughly 6 km (3.7 miles) into the loop, the trail skirts the Fluitberg, a low sandy ridge that rises only a few meters above the surrounding land. While the elevation change is minimal, the Fluitberg is a notable feature in this otherwise flat region. Historically, these sandy ridges were used as safe ground during floods and as grazing land for sheep. Today, the area is managed for conservation, with grazing sheep helping to maintain the open heath.
Historic Villages and Cultural Landmarks
The loop passes close to the village of Alphen, which has roots dating back to Roman times. The Sint Willibrorduskerk, with its 15th-century tower, is a highlight for those interested in local history. The village itself is a pleasant place to pause for refreshments, with a couple of cafés and a small bakery near the main square.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for peace of mind, especially as some forest paths can be indistinct after heavy rain or leaf fall. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy, with occasional muddy patches after wet weather. Sturdy walking shoes are sufficient; no special equipment is needed.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
Spring brings carpets of wildflowers to the forest floor, while autumn is notable for its fungi and the changing colors of the woodland. The heathland sections are at their most beautiful in August and September when the heather is in bloom. The area is also home to a variety of butterflies and dragonflies, especially near the small ponds and wetland patches along the route.
Getting There and Practical Tips
To reach the start, take a bus to Alphen’s central stop from Nijmegen or Arnhem, then walk a short distance to the trailhead near Dorpsstraat. Drivers can park near the church or in designated spaces along the main street. There are no significant elevation changes—total gain is less than 10 meters (about 30 feet)—so the hike is suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed day outdoors. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited outside the village.
This loop is a peaceful exploration of Gelderland’s rural landscapes, combining natural beauty, subtle historical features, and easy access for all hikers.
