Loop
“Stroll Almere’s sparkling lakeside, where modern cityscapes, wildlife, and waterside art blend beautifully.”
Starting from the lively heart of Almere Stad, the Weerwater Loop via Oeverpromenade, Sturmeypad, and Fongerspad is a flat, easy 7 km (about 4.3 miles) circuit that traces the scenic shoreline of Weerwater Lake. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is accessible for all fitness levels and ideal for a leisurely walk, family outing, or a relaxed jog.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the Kunstlinie Almere Flevoland (KAF), a prominent cultural venue at Esplanade 10, 1315 TA Almere. For those arriving by public transport, Almere Centrum train station is just a short walk away—exit the station, head south along Stationsplein, and you’ll reach the lakeside in under 10 minutes. If driving, parking is available at the nearby Schouwburgplein or Hospitaalgarage, both within easy reach of the starting point.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop begins along the Oeverpromenade, a broad, well-maintained path hugging the northern edge of Weerwater. Early on, you’ll pass the striking architecture of KAF and the city’s modern skyline reflected in the water. The promenade is lined with benches and public art, making it a pleasant introduction to the route.
Continuing east, the trail transitions onto Sturmeypad, a quieter section that weaves through landscaped parkland and offers expansive views across the lake. Here, you’ll notice waterfowl such as coots, swans, and grebes, especially in spring and early summer. The area is also frequented by cyclists and joggers, so be mindful of shared use.
Nature, Wildlife, and Landmarks
Midway around the loop, the path skirts close to the Lumièrepark, a green oasis perfect for a picnic or a short detour. The park’s open lawns and mature trees attract songbirds and provide a tranquil spot to pause. As you continue onto Fongerspad, the southern shore reveals a different perspective of Almere’s urban development, with floating houses and innovative waterfront architecture.
Weerwater itself is a man-made lake, created during the construction of Almere in the 1970s. The name means “again water,” referencing the area’s history as reclaimed land from the former Zuiderzee. Interpretive signs along the route explain the region’s transformation from seabed to city, offering insight into Dutch water management and urban planning.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire loop is paved or surfaced with fine gravel, making it suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. There are several cafes and restrooms near the start and finish, particularly around the Esplanade and KAF. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check for any temporary diversions or updates.
Expect a gentle, breezy walk with plenty of opportunities to enjoy Almere’s blend of nature, art, and modern design. The absence of elevation gain means the trail remains accessible year-round, though wind off the lake can be brisk—dress accordingly, especially outside summer months.
