Point-to-Point
“From city streets to shimmering lakes, this route blends bold Dutch design with vibrant nature and wildlife.”
Starting from Almere Muziekwijk, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) route offers a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most fitness levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near Almere Muziekwijk railway station, which is well-served by frequent trains from Amsterdam, Utrecht, and other major Dutch cities. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the station and in nearby residential areas.
Urban Beginnings and Transition to Nature
The first section leads you through the modern residential neighborhoods of Almere, a city renowned for its innovative urban planning and architecture. As you leave the built environment behind, the route transitions onto the Ijmeerdijk, a long, grassy dike that separates the city from the IJmeer lake. This stretch offers expansive views across the water, with the skyline of Amsterdam visible on clear days. The dike is a favorite among local cyclists and walkers, and you’ll likely spot waterfowl such as grebes, swans, and cormorants along the shoreline.
Ijmeerdijk and Gooimeerdijk: Water, Wildlife, and Wind
After about 5 km (3.1 miles), the path continues along the Gooimeerdijk, another dike that runs parallel to the Gooimeer lake. This area is part of the Flevoland polder, land reclaimed from the sea in the 20th century, and the engineering feats behind its creation are a point of local pride. The dikes themselves are a testament to Dutch water management expertise, and interpretive signs along the way explain the history and significance of the region.
The lakeside environment is rich in birdlife, especially during migration seasons. Look for herons, terns, and sometimes even osprey hunting over the water. The reed beds and wetlands adjacent to the dike are home to a variety of amphibians and small mammals. The wind can be brisk and unrelenting, so windproof clothing is recommended even on mild days.
Approaching Almere Centrum
As you approach the final 5 km (3.1 miles), the route curves back toward Almere Centrum, the city’s vibrant downtown area. The skyline here is marked by striking modern buildings, including the silver-clad Kunstlinie Almere Flevoland (KAF) cultural center and the Weerwater lake, which offers a scenic backdrop for the city. The trail ends near Almere Centrum railway station, making it easy to return to your starting point or continue your journey elsewhere.
Navigation and Amenities
The entire route is well-marked and follows paved or gravel paths suitable for walking and cycling. HiiKER is recommended for navigation, as it provides up-to-date trail maps and points of interest. Restrooms and cafes can be found at both Almere Muziekwijk and Almere Centrum, with occasional benches and picnic spots along the dikes. Water fountains are limited, so bring enough water for the journey.
This hike is a showcase of Dutch landscape engineering, urban design, and lakeside nature, all within easy reach of public transport and city amenities.
