Key Landmarks and Natural Features

• Velhorst Estate: Approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the Velhorst Estate, a historic property featuring a beautifully restored manor house and lush gardens. While the house itself isn't open to the public, the surrounding grounds are accessible and provide a glimpse into the region's aristocratic past.

• Staringkoepel: Around the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) mark, a self-operated ferry allows hikers to cross the Berkel River to visit the Staringkoepel, a charming pavilion offering panoramic views of the landscape. This spot is ideal for a brief rest and photo opportunities.

• Twentekanaal: As you continue, the trail intersects with the Twentekanaal, a significant inland waterway completed in the 1930s to facilitate transportation and irrigation in the region. Walking alongside the canal provides insight into the area's engineering history and its role in local commerce.

Flora and Fauna

The route traverses diverse habitats, including deciduous forests, wetlands, and open fields. Depending on the season, you may observe a variety of bird species, such as kingfishers and herons, especially near the river and canal. The wetlands are home to amphibians like frogs and newts, and the meadows often bloom with wildflowers in spring and summer.

Historical Significance

The region is steeped in history, with the Velhorst Estate dating back several centuries, reflecting traditional Dutch architecture and landscape design. The Staringkoepel is named after the poet and agriculturalist A.C.W. Staring, who contributed significantly to Dutch literature and agronomy in the 19th century. The Twentekanaal itself is a testament to early 20th-century Dutch engineering prowess, playing a crucial role in the economic development of the eastern Netherlands.

Navigation and Preparation

To ensure a smooth hiking experience, it's advisable to use the HiiKER app for detailed maps and real-time navigation assistance. The trail is well-maintained, but wearing sturdy footwear is recommended due to occasional muddy sections, especially after rain.
