Loop
“Wander along the Gein River for a tapestry of windmills, wildlife, and timeless Dutch countryside charm.”
Starting from the tranquil banks of the Gein River, just outside the village of Abcoude, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop offers a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for all levels of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near Abcoude train station, which is easily reached from Amsterdam Centraal in under 20 minutes by train. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the station and along the Gein riverbanks.
Riverside Scenery and Dutch Countryside
The route follows the meandering Gein River, a classic Dutch landscape of wide-open meadows, grazing cows, and traditional windmills. Early in the walk, you’ll pass the picturesque Geinzicht windmill, a perfect photo stop at around 1.5 km (0.9 miles) from the start. The riverbanks are lined with willow trees and wildflowers in spring and summer, attracting a variety of birds such as herons, swans, and grebes. Keep an eye out for hares darting through the fields and, in the quieter stretches, roe deer grazing at dawn or dusk.
Fort bij Nigtevecht and the Stelling van Amsterdam
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), the route reaches Fort bij Nigtevecht, a key part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed ring of 19th-century defensive forts encircling the city. Built between 1888 and 1903, this fort was designed to control the access between the Vecht and Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The fort itself is surrounded by a moat and lush wetlands, which are home to frogs, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl. Interpretive signs explain the fort’s history and its role in Dutch water defense strategies. The area around the fort is especially atmospheric in the early morning mist or late afternoon light.
Return via Nigtevecht and Rural Paths
After exploring the fort, the trail loops through the charming village of Nigtevecht, where you can pause at a local café or bakery for refreshments. The route then follows quiet country lanes and farm tracks back toward Abcoude, passing orchards and small canals. The final stretch offers expansive views across the polder landscape, with the skyline of Amsterdam visible on clear days.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire loop is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for families, casual walkers, and cyclists. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. Public toilets and refreshments are available in Abcoude and Nigtevecht, but facilities are limited along the river itself.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a peaceful escape into the Dutch countryside, with a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and fascinating military history.
