Loop
“Wander through a watercolor world of meadows, windmills, and tranquil lakes just beyond Amsterdam’s bustle.”
Starting from the outskirts of Amsterdam, the Abcouder Meer and Bullewijk Loop via Holendrecht Route and Voetangel Weg offers a gentle 15 km (about 9.3 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near Abcoude, a charming village just south of Amsterdam, easily reached by train from Amsterdam Centraal in under 20 minutes. From Abcoude station, it’s a short walk to the start point, or you can arrive by car and park in the village.
Navigating the Dutch Polder Landscape
The route quickly immerses you in the quintessential Dutch polder landscape—expansive meadows, winding waterways, and tranquil lakes. The first section skirts the edge of Abcouder Meer, a serene lake bordered by reed beds and home to a variety of waterfowl. Keep an eye out for herons, grebes, and, in spring and summer, nesting swans. The flat, well-maintained paths are suitable for all weather conditions, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain.
Historic Villages and Waterways
After about 4 km (2.5 miles), the trail leads you along the Bullewijk river, a historic waterway that once played a vital role in draining the surrounding peatlands. The route passes through the hamlet of Baambrugge, where you can admire traditional Dutch farmhouses and, if you wish, stop at a local café for refreshments. The area is dotted with windmills, some dating back to the 17th century, which were essential for water management in this low-lying region.
Voetangel and Nature Reserves
Continuing along Voetangelweg, the trail enters the Voetangel area, a protected nature reserve known for its rich biodiversity. Here, the landscape opens up to wide vistas across the polders, with grazing cattle and sheep adding to the pastoral charm. The reserve is particularly attractive to birdwatchers, with opportunities to spot rare species such as the black-tailed godwit and lapwing. In late spring, wildflowers blanket the meadows, attracting butterflies and bees.
Practical Information and Navigation
The entire loop is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and route guidance. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, especially near the lakes and rivers, making it easy to pause and enjoy the scenery. Public toilets are available in Abcoude and Baambrugge.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead, take a train from Amsterdam Centraal to Abcoude station. From there, follow local signage or HiiKER directions to the start of the loop. If driving, parking is available in Abcoude village, with easy access to the trail.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for those seeking a peaceful day out in the Dutch countryside, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature, history, and the unique water management heritage of the region.
