“Trace mule tracks from walnut terraces to a wind-kissed High Atlas pass, linking Berber villages.”
This is a big, high-mountain loop in Morocco’s High Atlas that links several Berber villages and crosses a classic pass above the Imlil valley. At roughly 22 km (13.7 mi) with about 1,700 m (5,580 ft) of total ascent, it’s a long day for strong hikers or a very comfortable 2-day itinerary if you want time for tea stops, photos, and a steadier pace at altitude.
Most hikers begin in or just above Imlil, the main trekking hub of the High Atlas. The nearest widely known landmark to treat as your “trailhead area” is Imlil village center (near the local trailhead cluster by the village paths leading toward Aroumd/Aremd and the Toubkal approach).
By car / taxi - From Marrakesh, the drive to Imlil is typically around 60–70 km (37–43 mi) depending on your exact pickup point and route, usually 1.5–2 hours. - Roads are paved into Imlil; the last stretch is mountain road driving with tight bends. In winter, occasional snow/ice higher up can affect conditions beyond the village.
By public transport - Common approach: get to Marrakesh and then travel toward Asni (a key junction town for the Imlil valley). From Asni, shared taxis typically continue up to Imlil. - Expect multiple legs and some waiting time; start early if you want to hike the same day you arrive.
You’ll be moving through a mix of stone mule tracks, rocky footpaths, stepped village lanes, and high-pass trail. Underfoot is often loose gravel and angular rock, with short steep pitches that add up over the day. The “Difficult” rating is mainly due to: - sustained climbing to the pass, - the total elevation gain, - and the fact that weather can change quickly at higher elevations.
A typical pacing plan for many hikers is 7–10 hours of moving time, plus breaks. If you’re not acclimatized or you’re carrying extra water/gear, plan on the longer end.
Exact numbers vary with the specific line you take through villages, but this is a practical way to think about the day.
1) Imlil to the first village section (toward Aroumd/Aremd and up-valley)
- ~3–5 km (1.9–3.1 mi), ~250–450 m (820–1,475 ft) gain
You’ll start on village paths and mule tracks, passing terraced fields and walnut orchards. Early on, the trail network can feel busy and braided—use HiiKER to stay on the intended line, especially where paths split around homes, gardens, and small bridges.
2) Climb toward the pass (Tizi Oussem / high crossing)
- ~6–8 km (3.7–5.0 mi), ~800–1,050 m (2,625–3,445 ft) gain
This is the heart of the effort: a steady, sometimes steep climb on rocky trail. You’ll notice vegetation thinning as you gain height—lower slopes with cultivated terraces give way to more open mountainside with hardy shrubs and grasses.
The pass area is often breezy; even on warm days in the valley, it can feel markedly cooler up high.
3) Descent into the Tizi Oussem valley and village approach
- ~4–6 km (2.5–3.7 mi), mostly descent with short rollers
The descent can be hard on knees and ankles because of loose rock and uneven steps. Trekking poles help a lot here. You’ll drop toward Tizi Oussem village, a well-known stop on High Atlas trekking routes, with stone houses and small guesthouses.
4) Return leg back toward Imlil via connecting valley paths
- ~6–8 km (3.7–5.0 mi), ~200–450 m (820–1,475 ft) gain (rolling)
The return is rarely “flat”—expect undulating terrain as you traverse between valleys and re-enter the Imlil area. Late in the day, this is where fatigue can make navigation mistakes more likely, because multiple mule tracks can look equally “main.” Keep checking HiiKER at junctions.
Wildlife sightings vary, but the High Atlas commonly offers: - Birdlife: small raptors riding thermals, and songbirds around cultivated areas. - Reptiles/insects: in warmer months, you may see lizards on sunlit rocks. - Grazing animals: goats, sheep, and mules are common; give them space on narrow paths, especially where the trail is edged
