Trail Overview

The Long Lake Loop is a loop trail, meaning you'll start and end at the same point, making logistics simpler. The trail is rated as medium difficulty, primarily due to its length rather than any challenging terrain. The path is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.

What to Expect

As you embark on the trail, you'll be greeted by a lush forest canopy that provides ample shade, making it a pleasant hike even on warmer days. The trail meanders through a mix of hardwood and coniferous trees, offering a rich tapestry of colors, especially during the fall.

Significant Landmarks

About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll come across a charming wooden bridge that spans a small creek. This is a great spot for a quick rest and some photos. Continuing on, around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach a scenic viewpoint overlooking Long Lake. This is the perfect place to pause and take in the tranquil beauty of the lake, perhaps even spotting some local wildlife like deer or various bird species.

Flora and Fauna

The trail is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. In the spring and summer, wildflowers such as trilliums and lady's slippers bloom along the path. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including white-tailed deer, red foxes, and a variety of bird species like the pileated woodpecker and the common loon.

Historical Significance

Keweenaw County has a rich history, particularly related to copper mining. While the Long Lake Loop itself doesn't pass directly through any historical mining sites, the region's history is palpable. The nearby town of Copper Harbor was a bustling mining community in the 19th century, and remnants of this era can still be seen in the architecture and local museums.

Practical Tips

Given the trail's moderate length, it's advisable to bring sufficient water and snacks. The trail can be muddy after rain, so waterproof hiking boots are recommended. There are no restrooms along the trail, so plan accordingly. Always practice Leave No Trace principles to keep this beautiful area pristine for future hikers.

Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, the Long Lake Loop offers a rewarding experience with its natural beauty, historical context, and serene landscapes.
