Trail Experience

The trail is well-defined and follows the old rail bed, offering a flat and straight route that is ideal for both walking and biking. The surface is a mix of gravel and compacted earth, which can be a bit rough in spots, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Historical Significance

The trail is steeped in history, as it follows the former Portland and Rochester Railroad that played a significant role in the region's development during the 19th and early 20th centuries. As you hike, imagine the steam locomotives that once chugged along this very path, transporting goods and passengers between Maine and New Hampshire.

Nature and Wildlife

The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of woodlands, wetlands, and open fields. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including white-tailed deer, red foxes, and a variety of bird species that inhabit the area. The trail is also lined with a diversity of plant life, from towering pines to delicate wildflowers, providing a picturesque backdrop for your hike.

Landmarks and Points of Interest

Navigation and Planning

To navigate the trail, you can use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and information to help you stay on track. Be sure to download the trail map before you go, as cell service can be spotty in some areas.
