Baltic Coast Wilderness Loop – Melnsils • Kolka • Pitrags
This stunning one-day circular coastal hike follows the wild, sandy shores of the Baltic Sea through one of Latvia’s most untouched and peaceful landscapes. The route connects the small seaside villages of Melnsils, Kolka, and Pitrags, offering long stretches of open beach, sea views, and deep immersion in nature.
Starting in Melnsils, the trail leads north along the shoreline toward Cape Kolka, where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga — a dramatic and ever-changing meeting point of waters, winds, and skies. From Kolka, the route continues along the quieter coast toward Pitrags, a historic fishing village surrounded by forest and dunes, before looping inland and back toward Melnsils.
Although the full route can be completed in a long and rewarding day, many hikers choose to divide it into multiple days. Careful planning is essential — the entire area lies within a protected nature reserve. Overnight stays are only permitted in designated areas, and hikers must follow strict Leave No Trace principles to preserve the fragile coastal ecosystem.
Expect pristine sandy beaches, coastal forests, and the soothing rhythm of waves accompanying you for much of the journey. Several small streams and rivulets flow into the sea along the way, requiring occasional crossings. In spring, a short section between Pitrags and Melnsils is often flooded, so waterproof footwear or alternate routing may be necessary.
During the summer months, you may meet other walkers enjoying the coast. Outside the main season, however, this trail becomes a deeply solitary and meditative experience — perfect for those seeking silence, reflection, and raw Baltic wilderness.
This is a hike for nature lovers, quiet explorers, and anyone wanting to experience the Baltic coastline in its most authentic and undisturbed form.
Car parking: It is possible to leave your vehicle for an extended period at the Melnsils campsite for a small fee — please check current prices on site.
