To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The trail begins with a gentle walk through a mixed forest of oak and hickory trees. The dense canopy provides ample shade, making it a comfortable hike even during warmer months. Approximately 0.5 km (0.31 miles) into the hike, you'll come across a small, picturesque pond. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. The pond is often frequented by local wildlife, including ducks, turtles, and occasionally, deer.
Further along, at around the 1 km (0.62 miles) mark, you'll find a well-preserved prairie section. This area is a remnant of the tallgrass prairies that once dominated the region. It's a fantastic spot for birdwatching, with species such as the Eastern Meadowlark and Red-winged Blackbird commonly sighted.
The McGrew Nature Preserve holds historical significance as part of the larger Douglas County area, which played a pivotal role during the Bleeding Kansas era in the mid-19th century. The region was a hotbed of conflict between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers, and remnants of this turbulent history can still be felt in the surrounding areas.
As you near the end of the trail, you'll loop back the way you came, offering a different perspective on the same beautiful landscape. The return journey provides an opportunity to spot any wildlife or plants you may have missed on the way in.
Given the medium difficulty rating, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water, especially during the hotter months.
