“A rewarding forest loop with river views and woodland trails.”
This medium loop in Avondale Forest Park packs a lot into 5.2 km / 3.3 mi, with 131 m / 430 ft of climbing and a highest point of 152 m / 500 ft. Starting at Lover's Leap near Wicklow, it circles through the forest above the Avonmore valley before dropping to the riverside and returning through mixed woodland. Although it is not long, the route is more demanding than a gentle park stroll, with short steep sections that make it feel like a solid outing of about 1 hour 15 minutes.
The walk is a loop, so there is no retracing for long stretches. It begins near Lover's Leap and heads into the forest on internal park trails, combining higher ground with a lower riverside section. The route is known for its changing character: wooded slopes, glimpses into the Avonmore River valley, and a stretch beside the river itself before the climb back through the trees.
Good footwear is worthwhile, especially after wet weather when woodland surfaces can be soft or slippery. The overall distance is modest, but the ups and downs explain the medium grading and make it better suited to walkers comfortable on uneven ground.
Avondale Forest Park lies about 1.5 km south of Rathdrum. For walkers arriving by public transport, Rathdrum railway station is the nearest rail stop. That makes this one of the easier forest walks in Wicklow to reach without a car.
The river is the defining feature here. The route follows the Avonmore for part of the walk and passes through a varied forest setting with a wide mix of tree species. There are strong views from the Lover's Leap area, and the wider park is also home to Avondale House.
Avondale is a large forest park with waymarked trails, picnic areas and visitor facilities, so it works well for a half-day outing in the woods. The mix of river corridor and managed woodland gives the walk a different feel from open mountain hiking, with shelter from the trees for much of the route. Because the trail includes steeper sections, it is best approached with enough time to take the climbs steadily rather than treating it as a quick flat riverside circuit.
