“A steep pilgrim climb to a hillside cross above Mount Melleray.”
Mount Melleray Pilgrim Paths - The Cross is a short but steep climb in the lower Knockmealdown Mountains above Mount Melleray. Although only 2.0 km / 1.2 mi long, it gains 119 m / 390 ft and reaches 313 m / 1,028 ft, so it feels more demanding than the distance suggests. Walkers can expect a brief, tough outing of about 35 minutes with a strong sense of pilgrimage and open hillside around the upper section.
The pilgrim paths start at Mount Melleray Abbey, about 6.5 km north of Cappoquin on the R669. From Cappoquin, the usual approach is to turn at The Cat’s Bar onto the Melleray Road and continue towards the abbey, where parking is provided at the trailhead. This is a rural mountain setting, so arriving by car is the simplest option for most walkers.
This is signed as one of the Mount Melleray pilgrim walks and follows the same network of old access paths long used around the monastery and hills. The line climbs away from the abbey side into the open slopes, heading for the Holy Year Cross marked on the mountain above. Despite the short distance, the ascent is concentrated, which explains the difficult grading.
Underfoot, the Mount Melleray paths combine grassy boreens, forest trails, mountain paths and short stretches of local road. On this route the key challenge is the climb rather than the mileage, so sturdy boots and wet-weather layers are sensible even for a quick walk. The exposed upper ground can feel much bigger and wilder than the map suggests.
The wider pilgrim path network extends through the lower Knockmealdown Mountains and is closely tied to Mount Melleray Abbey. These trails preserve the working and devotional routes used around the monastery and hills, giving this short climb a strong sense of place as well as a clear destination at the cross above the valley.
Waymarking for The Cross uses black arrows. Because the walk is short and steep, it suits walkers who want a quick climb rather than a long day out.
