“A short woodland loop with quiet forest paths and wide Comeragh views.”
The Hussian Gap Loop is an easy 4.5 km / 2.8 mi woodland circuit in County Waterford. Starting from Scrouty Road, it climbs and dips gently through Tower Hill Wood, gaining 77 m / 253 ft and reaching a highest point of 239 m / 785 ft. Most walkers will complete it in about 1 hour. The route stays compact and manageable, but the elevated ground gives it a bigger sense of landscape than the distance suggests.
This is a loop route, so it returns neatly to the starting point without retracing the whole walk. The line of the trail makes a circuit through the forest with a few changes of direction and a modest overall climb, making it a good choice for a short outing, a family walk, or an easy leg-stretcher in the Comeragh foothills. With 70 m / 230 ft of descent over the round, the gradients stay fairly mild.
The trail begins on Scrouty Road near Portlaw, on the western side of the lower Comeragh area. Portlaw is the nearest practical village for approaching the walk by car, and Waterford city is the main larger hub nearby. The walk is part of the marked trail network in Tower Hill Wood, a woodland area overlooking Portlaw and the Curraghmore estate lands.
Tower Hill Wood is known for mixed woodland, broad views towards the Comeraghs, Slievenamon and the River Suir, and a quiet network of forest trails.
Although this is a short forest walk, it sits within the wider setting of the Comeragh Mountains, a glaciated range in County Waterford. The surrounding uplands are noted for habitats including blanket bog, heath, rocky slopes and upland lakes, so even on a lower woodland circuit the backdrop is unmistakably mountain country.
Expect forest tracks and woodland paths, with some uphill and downhill sections but no major ascent for the distance. Waterproof footwear is a sensible choice after wet weather, as woodland surfaces can turn soft or slippery. Because the route is short and easy, it suits walkers looking for a straightforward outing, but it is still worth carrying a layer for exposed sections and using HiiKER for navigation around the turns of the loop.
