Point to Point
“A gentle riverside blueway walk through Clonmel.”
This easy point-to-point walk follows the Suir Blueway through Clonmel on a short riverside stretch from Anglesea Street to Carey’s Slip. At 2.5 km / 1.6 mi with only a gentle rise to 21 m / 69 ft, it suits a relaxed outing and takes about 30 minutes at a steady pace. The route stays close to the River Suir, linking the town centre with the eastern side of Clonmel on a straightforward urban greenway.
From the Suir-side streets near central Clonmel, the walk heads east along the blueway corridor towards Carey’s Slip. The line shown in HiiKER is direct and low-level, with no significant climbing, so the emphasis is on an easy riverside passage rather than a demanding hike. Because it is a point-to-point route, walkers can simply retrace their steps for the same distance if they prefer not to arrange onward transport.
The start is in Clonmel, making this one of the easiest Suir Blueway walks to reach without a car. Clonmel railway station is on Thomas Street, on the Waterford to Limerick Junction line. Town bus services also run within Clonmel, which is useful for reaching either end of the walk from elsewhere in town.
This section forms part of the wider Suir Blueway network, which combines riverside access with routes through towns and countryside between Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir. The River Suir has long shaped settlement, transport and industry in this part of Tipperary, so even a short walk here carries a strong sense of the town’s connection to the water.
The walk is best approached as a gentle riverside stroll. Its easy grading, short distance and very modest high point make it suitable for most walkers looking for a quick outing, but as with any urban waterside path it still makes sense to wear comfortable walking shoes and stay alert around road crossings and the river edge. HiiKER navigation is useful for keeping to the exact line through town.
The appeal here is less about summit views and more about the River Suir itself and the way the blueway threads through Clonmel. Expect changing views along the water, a close-up sense of the town’s riverside character, and an easy introduction to the larger blueway corridor east of Clonmel.
