“An easy loop through open bogland near Rooskey.”
Rooskey Rambling Bog Walks Red Loop is an easy 5.6 km / 3.5 mi circuit, with only 25 m / 82 ft of climbing and a highest point of 53 m / 173 ft. The route stays low and gentle, making it a relaxed outing of about 1 hour through the flat bogland landscape.
This is a loop walk starting at Lios na hAbhainn and returning to the same point. The line of the trail forms a broad circuit through open bog country, mixing quiet local roads and tracks with long straight stretches across reclaimed and cutaway ground. With just 22 m / 72 ft of descent over the full route, it is more about steady forward walking than climbing, and the open terrain gives the walk a spacious, unhurried feel.
The easy grading comes from the short distance, very modest height change and straightforward loop layout. Walkers should still expect typical bogland conditions underfoot in places, especially after wet weather, with sections that may feel soft, damp or uneven. Waterproof footwear is a sensible choice, and the exposed setting means wind and rain can be felt quickly even on a short walk.
The start lies at Lios na hAbhainn in Roscommon. Public transport does serve Rooskey, and it appears on both the national regional public transport map and the Roscommon Local Link network, so it is a practical place to reach without a car as well as by road.
Bog landscapes in Roscommon support a specialised mix of plant life, including heathers, sedges, bog cotton and insect-eating plants such as sundew and butterwort, along with wetland birdlife in suitable areas. On a short easy loop like this, the main preparation is simple: bring footwear that can cope with damp ground, add an extra layer for exposed sections, and keep HiiKER handy for following the turns around the circuit.
