“A quiet Roscommon walk through farmland, heather and wide countryside views.”
The Granlahan Blue Loop is an easy-going 9.3 km / 5.8 mi walk in County Roscommon with gentle climbing spread across open rural ground. Although listed here as a point-to-point route, it begins and ends at the same place near Roscommon, making it a straightforward outing of about 2 hours for most walkers. With 75 m / 246 ft of ascent and a highest point of 122 m / 401 ft, it is a relaxed route suited to walkers looking for quiet roads, farmland views and a sense of the wider bogland landscape.
This trail follows the Granlahan waymarked network through raised farmland and along quiet country roads. The walking is gentle rather than steep, with broad views across the surrounding countryside and towards Kiltullagh Hill and nearby turlough landscape. The route passes through the area of Moigh, where marshy ground, heather, pasture and hedgerows shape the character of the walk.
Public transport connections serve the area, and Bus Éireann route 457 links Roscommon and Castlerea via Ballintubber, which can help when planning onward travel in the area. Drivers should expect a rural approach on local roads rather than a large visitor hub.
This is an easy route with modest height gain, so the main demands come from distance and the exposed nature of the countryside rather than from steep climbing. Underfoot, walkers can expect a mix of minor roads and farm-country walking, so sturdy footwear is still useful, especially after wet weather when verges and softer ground can hold water. The route reaches only 122 m / 401 ft at its highest point, and total ascent is 75 m / 246 ft.
The countryside around Granlahan sits within a gently undulating farmed landscape shaped by bog, wet ground and slow drainage. Along the route, hedgerows, marshy patches and heather add colour and habitat, while the nearby Kiltullagh Hill area is known for archaeological remains. The result is a walk that combines everyday rural Roscommon scenery with traces of much older settlement in the surrounding uplands.
Waymarking on this route uses the blue loop markers. Because the route crosses quiet but open countryside, it is best tackled with weather-appropriate layers and whatever navigation support is needed for confidence at rural junctions.
