“A gentle rural loop beside bogland and quiet lanes.”
Ballaghderreen Looped Walk is a short easy loop in County Roscommon, starting at Aghalustia Bridge near Roscommon. At 3.3 km / 2.1 mi with only 8 m / 26 ft of climbing, it is a gentle outing that takes about 40 minutes and suits walkers looking for a quick circuit on quiet rural ground. The route reaches a highest point of 84 m / 275 ft and stays largely level throughout.
From the start near Aghalustia Bridge, the loop heads out before curving back to the starting point. The shape of the route makes a neat circuit rather than an out-and-back, so the scenery changes steadily even over a short distance. With just 6 m / 20 ft of descent and very little overall height change, this is a straightforward walk to follow at an unhurried pace.
This is an easy walk with minimal ascent, making it a good choice for a relaxed leg-stretcher rather than a demanding hike. Walkers can expect mostly flat terrain and a low high point of 84 m / 275 ft. Even so, rural lanes can be wet or muddy at the edges after rain, so waterproof footwear is still useful.
The walk begins just outside Ballaghaderreen, which is served by regular bus connections. Bus services link the town with places including Castlerea and Sligo on Local Link route 977, while Bus Éireann also serves Ballaghaderreen on longer-distance routes including connections toward Galway, Dublin Airport and Dublin. Anyone arriving by public transport should expect to finish the last stretch to the trailhead on foot from the town area.
The route passes through the low-lying countryside outside Ballaghaderreen, an area of quiet roads, farmland and boggy ground. The bog habitat here, with varied flora and fauna, adds interest to an otherwise gentle circuit.
Because the walk is short, most walkers will only need light gear, but waterproof layers are worth carrying in changeable weather. This is a loop of 3.3 km / 2.1 mi rather than a remote hill route, so the main preparation is simple: comfortable walking shoes, visibility on quiet roads, and enough care at road junctions and bridge approaches. HiiKER navigation is useful for staying on the correct circuit around the rural lanes.
