Temple Loop

Temple Loop is an easy 5.7 km / 3.5 mi circuit near Island Bridge in County Monaghan, taking about 1 hour. With only 43 m / 141 ft of climbing and a highest point of 100 m / 328 ft, it is a gentle outing that mixes lakeside scenery, woodland and low rolling ground around Feddan Hill.

The route

The walk starts at Island Bridge and follows a loop through the wooded lakeside landscape before returning to the same point. The route reaches Feddan Hill at around 3.9 km from the start, though at 91 m it is more a modest rise than a summit. The overall profile stays mild, making this a relaxed circuit rather than a strenuous climb.

This part of Monaghan is shaped by water, trees and rounded drumlin country. The loop sits in the wider Lough Muckno area, a landscape known for wooded shores, picnic spots and quiet walking ground. The start at Island Bridge is best reached by car or taxi from Monaghan town. For public transport, Monaghan is served by Bus Éireann and by TFI Local Link services, so walkers arriving without a car can continue onward locally by taxi.

Expect an easy-going walk on a mix of paths, tracks and minor lanes through low-lying countryside. The modest ascent means it suits a wide range of walkers, but sturdy footwear is still useful after wet weather when lakeside and woodland sections can be soft underfoot. Because the route stays close to water and trees, insect repellent can be handy in warmer months.
