“A brief woodland crossing through Black Island above Lough Muckno.”
An Bóthar Ard - The High Road is a short point-to-point walk across Black Island in Lough Muckno Leisure Park, linking Bluebell Walk to Lakeview near Castleblayney. Although it is only 0.7 km / 0.4 mi long and usually takes about 10 minutes, the route is graded medium and includes a steady change in level, with 18 m / 59 ft of climbing, 37 m / 121 ft of descent, and a highest point of 138 m / 452 ft.
This is a simple crossing rather than a loop, running diagonally through the wooded interior of Black Island. The line of the walk suggests a direct link between other waymarked trails in the park, so it works well as a short connector or as part of a longer wander around the island. The brief distance means there is little time to settle into a rhythm, but the up-and-down profile gives it more character than the mileage suggests.
The walk sits within the forested Black Island area of Lough Muckno Leisure Park, a well-known outdoor area on the edge of Castleblayney. The wider park is known for woodland trails, picnic areas and lakeside scenery. Even on a very short outing, the combination of trees, water nearby and the enclosed feel of the island gives this route a distinct sense of place.
The start and finish are both within the Lough Muckno parklands beside Castleblayney, so this walk is easiest to reach by heading for the leisure park and then walking in to the trail network. There are parking areas within the park close to the bridge access to Black Island. By road, Castleblayney is approached from the N2 and N53, with estate access from the town side into Lough Muckno. Public transport into Castleblayney is available from the wider county bus network, after which the park is a short local transfer or walk depending on where visitors arrive in town.
Despite the modest length, the medium grade makes sense for a route that is short, undulating and likely to be taken on compact woodland paths rather than broad paved promenades. In wet weather, forest tracks can be slippery underfoot with leaves, mud or exposed roots, so shoes with decent grip are a better choice than casual trainers. Because it is point to point, walkers should also decide in advance whether to retrace their steps or continue onto one of the neighbouring marked trails.
The parkland around Lough Muckno includes the former Hope Castle demesne on the eastern side of Castleblayney. That setting gives the walk a mix of estate woodland and lakeshore landscape rather than open hill terrain. The name Bluebell Walk at one end of the route also hints at the spring woodland character found on Black Island.
