“A gentle railway greenway walk through quiet border-country scenery.”
SLNCR Greenway Glenfarne is an easy out-and-back walk on a short section of former railway in north Leitrim. The route covers 4.2 km / 2.6 mi with 31 m / 102 ft of climbing and 28 m / 92 ft of descent, reaching a highest point of 103 m / 337 ft. With its gentle gradients and straightforward line, it suits a relaxed stroll of about 1 hour.
The walk starts and finishes at Glenfarne Greenway and follows the old rail corridor before returning the same way. Because it uses a disused railway alignment, the route is generally even and easy to follow, with only slight changes in height across the full length. The out-and-back format also makes it simple to turn around earlier if a shorter walk is preferred.
The trailhead lies just off the N16 near Glenfarne, with parking available at the start. Drivers approaching on the N16 should look for the turn signposted for St Michael's Church and the greenway access road. Glenfarne is a small village in north County Leitrim close to the borders with Cavan and Fermanagh, so this is a handy stop for anyone travelling the Sligo to Enniskillen road.
This greenway follows part of the former Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway, the line that once linked Sligo with Enniskillen through Leitrim and nearby border districts. Even on a short walk, the straight corridor and gentle engineering give the route a distinct railway character.
The route runs through quiet rural scenery on the edge of Glenfarne, with a peaceful feel that suits walkers looking for a short, undemanding outing. The wider area is known for its wooded demesne landscape and for nearby Lough MacNean, which forms part of the natural boundary between Leitrim, Cavan and Fermanagh. This setting gives the walk a strong sense of the border country without requiring a long day on the trail.
This is a good choice for families, casual walkers and anyone wanting a gentle leg-stretcher rather than a full hillwalk. Sturdy walking shoes are usually enough, and the modest distance of 4.2 km / 2.6 mi means there is little need for specialist gear in normal conditions. As with any greenway walk in Ireland, waterproof layers are worth carrying if the weather looks changeable.
