“A compact island loop with sea views and a rewarding summit outlook.”
Cullum's Cup Main Loop is a 7.9 km / 4.9 mi circuit on Valentia Island near Knightstown, with 177 m / 581 ft of climbing and a highest point of 171 m / 561 ft. The route packs a good variety into a short outing, mixing quiet island roads, narrower lanes and rougher hillside paths on a medium-grade walk that takes about 2 hours. It climbs towards Kilbeg Mountain before looping back with wide coastal and harbour views.
Starting at Reenellen near Knightstown, the loop heads out across the eastern end of Valentia Island and works inland before climbing towards Kilbeg Mountain, reached about 4.8 km / 3.0 mi from the start. The high ground around Cullum's Cup is the main turning point of the walk, after which the route descends across open slopes and returns by smaller roads and lanes towards the coast. As a loop, it avoids retracing long sections and keeps changing direction, so the views shift between hillside, harbour and the mainland beyond.
This is a medium walk rather than a long one, but the steady ascent and mixed surfaces give it enough bite to feel like a proper hill outing. Expect a combination of paved sections, narrow local roads and more rugged ground on the climb and descent. In wet weather the rougher stretches can be slippery, and care is needed on road sections where walkers may be sharing space with vehicles. Boots or sturdy trail shoes are a sensible choice.
The start lies just outside Knightstown on Valentia Island. The island is linked to the mainland by the bridge at Portmagee, and there is also a car ferry between Reenard Point and Knightstown. Regional bus services serve the South Kerry area and include Valentia Island, making Knightstown the practical arrival point for anyone coming by public transport. Drivers should aim for Knightstown and the Reenellen area on the island's eastern side.
The walk's standout feature is the viewpoint at Cullum's Cup on the slopes of Kilbeg Mountain. From here the outlook opens across the Iveragh Peninsula and the waters around Valentia, with views that can include Cahersiveen, Portmagee Channel, Beginish, Knightstown and the lighthouse side of the island. The route also gives a good sense of Valentia's position between sheltered harbour waters and the broader Atlantic-facing landscape of South Kerry.
Valentia Island is one of Ireland's most westerly inhabited islands. On the walk itself, the mix of open hillside, hedged lanes and coastal setting creates good habitat for birds and for the lush plant growth for which the island is known.
