Loop
“A quiet bog loop with loughs and wide open views.”
This easy loop across the Sheana Mhach Bog Trails is a short outing through open bogland on a 3.3 km / 2.0 mi circuit with just 19 m / 62 ft of ascent and a highest point of 43 m / 140 ft. It is well suited to a relaxed walk of about 41 minutes, with a strong sense of space throughout.
Lúibin Loch na mBruaichíní is a loop, so it returns neatly to its starting point without any retracing. The climbing is gentle, and the overall height change is small, so this is more about enjoying the landscape than tackling a physical challenge.
Because the trail is shared with cyclists, it is worth keeping an eye and ear out on the straighter sections. After wet weather, some parts can still feel muddy or slick despite the surfaced trail.
Bus Éireann route 424 serves the area, linking Galway with Lettermullen via Carraroe, which makes the network reachable by public transport as well as by car.
This loop explores a landscape of blanket bog and heath dotted with loughs, including Loch na mBruaichíní itself.
That mix of open scenery, traditional land use and quiet water gives the route much of its character.
Livestock may be present nearby, so dogs should be kept on a lead at all times.
Waterproof footwear is a sensible choice here. Although the route is short and easy, exposed bogland can feel wetter and windier than its distance suggests, and boardwalk sections may be slippery in damp conditions.
