“A quiet lakeside bog loop with wide Connemara views.”
Sheana Mhach Bog Trails - Lúibin Loch Bharr an tSrutháin is a short easy loop through open bogland beside Lough Vauratruffaun in County Galway. The route covers 2.7 km / 1.7 mi with 20 m / 66 ft of climbing, reaches a highest point of 29 m / 94 ft, and usually takes about 34 minutes. It is a good choice for a gentle walk with wide views over water, heath and blanket bog.
This is a loop route, so walkers return to the start without retracing the whole way. The trail circles the lake on a mix of gravel path, short tar-and-chip sections and composite boardwalk, with only mild rises and falls along the way. Although the climb is small, the ground can feel exposed in wet or windy weather, so steady footwear is still worthwhile.
The trail is part of the Seana Mhach Bog Trails near Casla, with trailheads on both the south and north sides of the network and parking available at each. Bus Éireann route 424 serves the area from Galway towards Leitir Mealláin via An Cheathrú Rua, making public transport a practical option for walkers starting nearby.
The walk crosses a landscape of blanket bog and heath, one of the defining habitats of western Connemara. The bog supports the specialised plant life typical of Irish blanket bogs, including bog mosses, sedges, heathers and insect-eating plants such as sundews.
This is an easy outing, but bogland paths can still be loose, uneven or muddy in places. Waterproof footwear is useful after rain, and the open setting means wind and showers can arrive quickly. The usual Leave No Trace habits matter here: stay on the trail, take litter home and respect the quiet of the bog.
