“A gentle woodland loop with quiet forest paths and local heritage.”
Castlegrove Woods trail is a short, easy loop in County Galway, covering 1.5 km / 0.9 mi on mostly level forest ground. With a highest point of 52 m / 170 ft and only 13 m / 43 ft of elevation loss, it suits walkers looking for a gentle outing of about 17 minutes in a quiet woodland setting.
The walk follows a compact loop through the woodland before returning to the start. The route stays low throughout and is easy to follow, making it a straightforward choice for a brief leg-stretcher or a relaxed family walk.
This is a managed forest walk with waymarked trails through the trees and a peaceful rural feel. A castle at the entrance gives the site a distinctive sense of place, while nearby Lough Aclaureen supports the surrounding woodland habitat even though the lake is not a main feature of the walk itself. In warmer months the woods can be lively with birdlife, dragonflies and other insects.
The trail lies in north County Galway in the wider Tuam area. There is parking at the woods.
Expect forest tracks and a very modest amount of climbing, so ordinary walking shoes are usually enough in dry weather, with sturdier footwear useful after rain. Even on a short route, it is worth carrying a light waterproof and using HiiKER for navigation around the loop and its junctions within the woods.
