“A short Inishowen hill walk through open bogland heights.”
Slí Croí Inis Eoghain is a 5.5 km / 3.4 mi point-to-point walk in County Donegal with 225 m / 738 ft of climbing and a highest point of 254 m / 834 ft. The route starts at Meenamalagh Bridge and finishes on the L54912, making it a short but steadily uphill outing that suits walkers looking for a moderate hill walk of about 1.5 hours.
From Meenamalagh Bridge the walk heads inland and climbs into open hillside. The overall line is point to point, with most of the ascent packed into the first part of the route before it reaches higher ground. With 76 m / 249 ft of descent against 225 m / 738 ft of ascent, this is a route that finishes noticeably higher than it starts.
The moderate grade comes from the steady climb rather than the distance alone. Walkers should expect rougher upland ground higher up, where wet patches, soft boggy stretches and uneven footing are typical of this part of Inishowen. Waterproof footwear is a sensible choice in any season, and low cloud can make the upper ground feel more remote than the mileage suggests.
The start lies by Meenamalagh Bridge in Inishowen. For anyone arranging a linear walk without a second car, the area is served by TFI Local Link Route 244, which links Derry, Carndonagh and Moville. As this is a point-to-point route, it is worth planning the finish and return transport before setting out.
This part of Inishowen is shaped by open upland bog and heath, with broad views over rounded hills and a distinctly exposed feel on the higher ground. Nearby blanket bog habitat in the area supports plants such as purple moor-grass, deergrass, cross-leaved heath, ling heather, bog-myrtle and bog asphodel, along with insect-eating round-leaved sundew in wetter ground. The underlying rocks in this part of the peninsula include quartzite, limestone, slates and grits, helping to shape the rough, waterlogged upland landscape.
Although the walk is not long, it is best treated as a proper hill outing. The climbing, exposed ground and likely wet underfoot conditions mean walkers will be more comfortable with sturdy footwear, a waterproof layer and enough food and water for the route. Because the walk finishes away from the start, it also helps to have transport arranged in advance or to use HiiKER to plan the return.
