“Quiet Donegal hill loop with old settlement traces and wide upland views.”
Fox’s Rock Bullaba (Bulben) Loop is a 9.7 km / 6.0 mi medium loop on the hills above south Donegal, with 269 m / 883 ft of climbing and a highest point of 337 m / 1,107 ft. Allow about 2.5 hours for the round. The route starts on the L6871 near Donegal and makes a compact circuit across the lower slopes of Bulbin, mixing steady climbing with broad views over the surrounding countryside.
From the roadside start, the loop heads into a sheltered valley and follows mainly gravel tracks, with a short stretch of open bog on the lower slopes. The climbing is gradual rather than severe, and the circuit shape keeps the scenery changing as it works around the hillside before returning to the start. With 294 m / 965 ft of descent over the day, walkers should still expect a few uneven and potentially slippery sections on the way back down.
This is a walk of small-scale upland detail as much as wide views. Along the valley are the remains of a pre-famine clachan and traces of older field patterns that show how the hillside was once farmed. Higher up, the route opens out to panoramic views across the surrounding landscape, and Bulbin’s summit cross is a notable landmark on the mountain above.
The trailhead lies on a minor road off the local road network inland from Dunkineely, so most walkers will find a car the simplest way to reach the start. For public transport, the nearest practical bus link is Dunkineely, which is served by TFI Local Link route 293 between Donegal Town and Glencolmcille, and by Bus Éireann route 490 between Donegal and Glencolumbcille via Killybegs. From there, the start is still some distance away, so the final approach usually needs to be arranged in advance.
The mix of gravel track and open bog makes this a good choice for walkers who want a moderate hill outing without a long mountain day. Waterproof boots are the better option here, especially after wet weather, and gaiters can be useful on the boggier ground. Even on a relatively short route, the exposed upper sections can feel much cooler and windier than the start, so extra layers are worth carrying.
The route gives a close look at a worked upland landscape shaped by settlement, grazing and small field systems. The clachan remains and old field patterns are part of that story, while the open slopes and broad outlooks give the walk its sense of space. It is a route where local history is built into the hillside rather than separated from it.
