“A hill crossing above Lough Foyle with wide views to Donegal and Antrim.”
The Cruckahenny Trail is a point-to-point walk across the hills above Quigley’s Point on the Inishowen Peninsula. It covers 8.9 km / 5.5 mi with 289 m / 948 ft of climbing, reaches a highest point of 300 m / 985 ft, and usually takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. The route starts near Quigley’s Point and finishes near Donegal, giving it a more remote feel than a village loop and making return transport worth planning in advance.
From the eastern side of Inishowen, the trail heads inland and uphill through the Cruckahenny hills before descending towards Donegal. The line of the walk is generally westbound, climbing away from the shore and then crossing open upland ground. As a medium-grade route, it is best suited to walkers who are comfortable with steady ascent, uneven surfaces and a one-way finish rather than a circuit back to the start.
Higher up, the trail opens out to broad views over Lough Foyle, across to Binevenagh and towards the Antrim coast.
The start is at Quigley’s Point, a village on the eastern shore of Inishowen overlooking Lough Foyle. Drivers can approach on the local road network from the Moville and Muff direction, while public transport users can plan around bus services that run through Donegal town and county networks, then arrange onward travel to the trailhead and from the finish near Donegal. Because this is a point-to-point walk, a car shuffle or pre-booked pickup is often the simplest option.
This is a moderate hill walk rather than a flat shoreline ramble. Walkers should expect a mix of minor roads, tracks and open hillside, with the main effort coming on the climb to the high ground. Waterproof footwear, an extra layer and good visibility on the HiiKER map will make the outing more comfortable, especially as the route finishes away from the start.
Quigley’s Point sits on the edge of Lough Foyle in Inishowen, the large peninsula between Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly in the far north of Donegal. That setting gives the trail a distinctive mix of coastal outlooks and inland hill country, with the walk quickly leaving the village edge behind for more open ground.
