“A gentle lakeside walk into Inchigeelagh.”
This easy point-to-point walk follows the south side of Lough Allua from South Lake Road to Inchigeelagh Bridge, covering 8.1 km / 5.0 mi with 89 m / 292 ft of ascent and 101 m / 331 ft of descent. With a highest point of 129 m / 424 ft and an estimated walking time of about 2 hours, it is a gentle outing through the upper Lee Valley with long waterside views and a straightforward finish in Inchigeelagh.
The walk begins on South Lake Road and tracks east along the southern shore of Lough Allua. The line of the route suggests a mostly steady road walk with only modest rises and falls, matching the easy grading and low overall climb. As the lake narrows towards the village, the route continues to Inchigeelagh Bridge, where the River Lee runs through the settlement.
Because this is a linear walk, transport planning matters. A car shuttle between the start on South Lake Road and the finish at Inchigeelagh Bridge is the simplest option. Inchigeelagh lies on the R584 between Macroom and Bantry, and regional public transport maps show Inchigeelagh on the network, so it is also possible to combine the walk with a bus connection and return to the start by road.
The main companion on this walk is Lough Allua, a freshwater lake on the River Lee just west of Inchigeelagh. The surrounding valley is recognised for its scenic quality, and the road into Inchigeelagh forms part of a designated scenic route through this part of County Cork. The setting is one of open water, wooded slopes and enclosing uplands rather than steep mountain ground, which helps keep the walk accessible.
Lough Allua is listed as a proposed Natural Heritage Area. Inchigeelagh itself sits on the River Lee and has a bridge crossing at the eastern end of the walk. The wider area is part of the upper Lee Valley landscape.
This is best approached as an easy road-based walk rather than a rough trail. The modest elevation profile makes it suitable for a relaxed pace, but walkers should still be prepared for traffic on local roads and for exposed conditions beside the lake. Waterproof layers and bright clothing are sensible in changeable weather, and HiiKER navigation is useful for a linear route with separate start and finish points.
