“A gentle village loop with old paths and wide views.”
Boherbue Looped Walk is an easy 4.0 km / 2.5 mi circuit from Paddy McAuliffe Avenue in Boherbue, climbing gently to a highest point of 214 m / 702 ft. With 46 m / 151 ft of ascent and 43 m / 141 ft of descent, it is a short outing that suits a relaxed walk of about 1 hour around the edge of the village and nearby countryside.
The loop starts and finishes in the village centre and follows a compact circuit on minor roads, paths and field-edge walking. The route first uses an old Mass Path along a bounds ditch, then opens out to higher ground with westward views towards the Paps Mountains before returning on a quiet cul-de-sac road and a footpath back into Boherbue.
This is a straightforward walk with only modest climbing, making it a good choice for a gentle leg-stretcher or an easy family outing. The route stays low and short, but walkers should still expect a mix of surfaced sections and rural walking underfoot, with some uneven ground possible on the off-road parts.
The trailhead is in Boherbue village on Paddy McAuliffe Avenue. Boherbue lies on the R577 in north-west County Cork, so drivers can reach the start easily through the village. For public transport, Bus Éireann serves Boherbue.
One of the distinctive features of this short loop is its use of an old Mass Path. As the route rises slightly above the village, it gives broad views across the surrounding countryside and out towards the Paps Mountains to the west. Boherbue itself takes its name from the Irish An Bóthar Buí, meaning the yellow road.
Because the walk is short, most walkers will only need light day gear, but waterproof footwear is still sensible for rural sections and changeable Cork weather. HiiKER navigation is useful here, especially where the loop leaves the village streets and joins quieter field-edge sections.
